Agne Kiviselg: her journey in bikini fitness

Agne Kiviselg talks about bikini fitness, competition week, nutrition and what helps her balance training with everyday life.

Agne Kiviselg: her journey in bikini fitness

In the gym, Agne Kiviselg discovered a sport that gave her training a clear purpose. This is the story of how bikini fitness became part of her daily routine, why competition week calls for a cool head and what advice she has for beginners.

Agne Kiviselg and her introduction to bikini fitness

Agne Kiviselg has been involved in bikini fitness since autumn 2014. She has competed for two seasons and, at the time of publication, was actively preparing for her third. Sport had already been part of her life, but it had never quite had the same clear direction.

At school, she played competitive table tennis and football. Later, she kept fit through aerobics and running. Still, no sport had ever really felt like “her thing”. She finally found that feeling in the gym and in bikini fitness.

Agne really caught the exercise bug around autumn 2013, when she discovered group training classes. Within half a year, they no longer felt like enough. She wanted to work out more often than the class timetable allowed. That was how she came to start training on her own in the gym.

Her first steps were straightforward and familiar to many: she watched what others were doing in the gym, tried it herself and searched online for training plans and exercise libraries. In autumn 2014, she told her coach, Ramil Lipp, that she had secretly been dreaming of fitness and competing. That conversation led to the decision to give her training a goal, a structured plan and a clear direction.

Agne Kiviselg on the competition stage

Agne’s sporting highlight was winning the Estonian champion title in the -172 cm bikini fitness category at the I Estonian Open Championships in autumn 2015. She says remembering that moment still gives her goosebumps.

There were more memorable moments to come. At Riga Pearl in 2015, she took II place in the -169 cm category. The 2015 Estonian Bodybuilding and Fitness Championships brought her III place in the bikini fitness overall standings. These results show that her first serious season was about more than trying things out: she was fully engaged in competitive sport.

Agne felt that bikini fitness was growing in popularity. It was already evident at competitions, with more and more beautiful bikinis appearing on stage. Women were also becoming increasingly confident in the gym. Once seen largely as a male domain, that idea now sounds outdated—and frankly, that is a good thing.

Competition week, food and recovery

The week before a competition is intense, Agne says. Everything reaches its peak: conditioning, mental activity, nerves and attention to the smallest details. By then, the hard work of getting into competition shape is done, so you need to be careful during training and avoid injury.

The evening before a competition involves carefully applying competition tan, packing and checking everything several times. The bikini, shoes, needle and thread, and anything else that might be needed on stage day all have to come along. Checking like this is not overthinking. It is reassuring.

Agne does her own stage makeup and styles her hair. She also looks at inspiring photos and videos and checks herself in the mirror about 100 times. In the autumn, she was adding the final crystals to her bikini just before the competitions. Since she had made that season’s bikini herself, gluing on the crystals was also a way to relieve tension.

Agne is very consistent with her nutrition. She follows a set meal plan all year round, sticks to her calorie target and weighs her food. She prepares all her meals herself using clean ingredients and takes her food containers with her. This routine works for her and has become part of everyday life.

Her diet features familiar fitness staples: cottage cheese, quark, chicken or turkey breast, vegetables and fruit, almonds and other nuts. She uses honey instead of sugar or artificial sweeteners and makes sure she drinks enough plain water every day.

One of her favorite snacks while dieting came from her coach: low-fat, high-protein quark with a little toasted muesli and Haps. It is a simple combination, but it provides energy before a workout and tastes sweet enough to satisfy.

Outside competition season, Agne allows herself something she fancies on Saturdays. During competition prep, it is a different story. She describes her approach then as 0-tolerance, saving treats until the end of the season. Her supplements include multivitamins, Omega 3-6-9, vitamin D, Joint+, BCAA during training and a protein shake containing BCAA after her workout.

Agne Kiviselg’s advice for beginners

Agne’s goal for the future is to be even a little better each day than she was the day before. She wants to keep training, compete successfully and add to her trophy shelf. She also dreams of earning a pro card.

She considers willpower and determination her greatest strengths. Once she has set her mind on something, she does not give up easily. At the same time, she admits that perfectionism can sometimes be exhausting. Expecting too much of yourself too soon does not always make the journey easier.

Agne’s motivation comes primarily from within. Thoughts and dreams have great power. The support, understanding and encouragement of those close to her also matter. Videos, blogs, articles and the social media accounts of other competitors and bikini pros give her an extra boost.

To unwind, she does something unrelated to training or the fitness world. She reads, does crafts, goes to the cinema or escapes to another city or the countryside for the weekend. Sometimes she needs to talk about anything else. Sometimes, training and food are exactly what she wants to talk about.

Her message to beginners is straightforward: it all depends on how much you want something and how much you are willing to commit to it. If the fitness world were easy, everyone would be doing it. Find the courage, seek inspiration, talk to people with more experience and work toward your dream.

Her motto? All or nothing!
