Liina Randpere (27) is a TV personality, project manager and group fitness instructor with four years of experience. She also teaches kitesurfing—and when she has time to spare, she hosts “Hooaeg” on Kanal 2. In this interview, Liina explains how she became an instructor, which classes she teaches and what she recommends if you’re starting to exercise for your health.
How Liina Randpere became an instructor
Liina has been working as an instructor for four years. She started out teaching BodyPump, which she discovered quite by chance through her own workouts. Further training and new classes gradually followed. She now teaches StripAeroobika, BodyPump, FatBurnerDance, StripDance and, when needed, BodyBalance.
Three years ago, she took up a very different sport: kitesurfing. Her passion led her to gain an international kitesurfing instructor qualification, and she now teaches that too. There’s no need to advertise; word of mouth does the job.
Her academic background is in audiovisual media—specifically television directing—which she studied at Tallinn University, rather than sports science. Television remains her main job, but her knowledge as an instructor often comes in handy there.
Where Liina Randpere teaches
Her home club is Arctic Sport, where she teaches StripAeroobika and BodyPump. Liina teaches FatBurnerDance at Meriton and StripDance at Rocca MyFitness and Viimsi MyFitness. She teaches BodyBalance when covering for a colleague.
Over the years, her class schedule has grown so much that teaching has become a second job alongside her television work. It feels like a hobby on the days when she’d want to go anyway. It feels like work when she has a headache half an hour before class and can’t find anyone to cover.
What makes an ideal instructor, according to Liina Randpere
“An instructor needs energy, stamina, enthusiasm and a positive attitude,” says Liina. “And they need to be a good actor.” The type of class dictates the role: strong and assertive in BodyPump, soothing and calming in BodyBalance, sensual and teaching you to love your body in StripDance.
Are instructors born or made? Both. You can learn more about technique and teaching methods. Personal qualities—energy, stamina and the ability to inspire people—need to come naturally.
Liina finds motivation in the workouts themselves. “Sometimes I’m so tired by the evening, but if I make myself go to a workout, my energy comes back on its own.” To unwind, she sometimes needs one completely free day when she doesn’t have to do anything—a day to just lounge around.
Liina Randpere’s advice if you’re new to exercising for your health
Her first recommendation is to write down a realistic training plan. Set a specific goal and make sure you break it down into smaller milestones to keep you motivated. It’s easy to lose momentum when you start on your own.
Her second recommendation is to ask an instructor for advice. A good instructor will help you set goals that are neither too demanding nor too easy. And her third, most important recommendation is to be consistent. Results come from taking steps in the same direction every week.
Liina doesn’t look to any particular person as her benchmark for the ideal physique. Huge muscles don’t appeal to her; she prefers a toned, well-cared-for body that radiates health, whether it’s a man’s or a woman’s.
