Indrek Otsus: video interview with a bodybuilding legend

Indrek Otsus is a living legend of Estonian bodybuilding. Originally from Tartu, he began lifting weights in 1973 and has never outgrown the hobby. In this video interview, he speaks openly about his journey — from schoolboy to junior champion, then overall senior champion and eventually head coach of the Estonian national team. His story spans half a century of strength sports in Estonia.

Who is Indrek Otsus?

Born on 14 August 1955 in Tartu, Indrek graduated from Tallinn Secondary School No. 7 in 1973 and from Tartu State University in 1978, qualifying as a biology and chemistry teacher. Sport was already part of his life at school — he started lifting weights the year he finished secondary school. More than fifty years have passed since then, and Indrek remains an influential figure in Estonian strength sports.

His background in biology has clearly shaped his coaching style. Indrek explains how the body works with laboratory precision, yet always in terms his audience can understand. This combination of scientific thinking and practical gym knowledge makes him a sought-after lecturer and judge. Few in the field bring both together in this way.

Indrek Otsus on the competition stage

Indrek claimed his first major victory in 1976, winning the junior division at the G. Tenno Memorial. He repeated the achievement a year later, then took the overall title at the same competition in 1985 — an unusual progression, given the considerable step up from junior champion to overall senior winner.

Indrek was already making his mark internationally during the Soviet era. In 1979, he returned from Budapest with a win in the -175 cm height class. He competed in Nitra in 1980 and Zvolen in 1981 — both then in Czechoslovakia and now in Slovakia. He won the overall title on both occasions. After Estonia regained independence, Indrek represented the national team at three World Championships and three European Championships between 1992–2008. He placed eighth at the 2005 European Championships.

At home, Indrek won eight Estonian championship titles between 1978–2005, including three in the toughest category — the overall competition (1980, 1981 and 1991). No Estonian bodybuilder of his generation surpasses that tally, even by a narrow margin.

From iron to cycling

Less well known is Indrek’s serious involvement in cycling. He won silver in the individual time trial at the Estonian Championships in 1995 and bronze in 1997. It is an unusual combination for a bodybuilder — many people believe muscle mass and endurance sports are incompatible. Indrek proved otherwise and draws on that experience as a coach when clients ask about balancing cardio and strength training.

Indrek Otsus as a coach and judge

Indrek has been coaching since 1992. He holds a level 7 qualification as a bodybuilding and fitness coach, giving him master coach status — the highest level in Estonia’s professional qualifications system. He has also served as head coach of the Estonian national team and as an IFBB international judge. In 2006, he was awarded the International Federation of Bodybuilding’s bronze medal.

He has written two books: “Bodybuilding & Fitness”, which has been essential reading in Estonian gyms for years, and “50 Years of Competitive Bodybuilding in Estonia” — effectively a chronicle of the sport in this part of the world.

His athletes have gone on to become national team competitors and coaches whose names are familiar to gym-goers. Much of the story of Estonian bodybuilding over the past thirty years is his story — whether he was in front of the stage as a competitor, backstage as a judge or beside an athlete in the gym, coaching them through another set of squats.

Indrek Otsus in a video interview

In the interview, Indrek discusses his sporting journey, the state of bodybuilding in Estonia before and after the restoration of independence, his coaching experiences and what sets the mindset of an athlete with a long career apart. You will also hear his legendary line: “If I’m not working out, it means I’m dead.” A simple sentence, but it captures Indrek’s entire attitude.
