Stretch marks: where they come from and what to do

Stretch marks appear after rapid weight change or growth. Let's look at where they come from, who gets them and which treatments really work.

Venitusarmid: kust nad tulevad ja mida teha

Stretch marks aren’t among the world’s big problems — pollution and hunger matter more. But if you eat well and train to look good, those purple streaks on your stomach or thighs are still annoying. In this article we look at where stretch marks come from, who is most likely to get them and which treatments actually make a difference.

Why stretch marks actually form

In medicine they are called striae atrophicae. The skin tears in its deeper layers along linear lines, which are purple at first and turn white over time. Typical triggers are rapid weight gain, rapid weight loss, pregnancy or a growth spurt in puberty.

The irony is that weight creeps up quietly, but you only notice the marks once you start losing weight — the skin becomes looser and the streaks stand out more. That’s why stretch marks often feel unfair — they showed up just when you started making progress.

For a physically active person, the recommendation is not to gain more than 2% of body weight per month. A woman weighing 70 kilos could therefore add up to 1.4 kilos in a month — more than that strains the skin beyond what it can adapt to. A higher-protein eating plan can in theory help support the skin’s recovery, since collagen and elastin are protein-based.

Who gets stretch marks more often

Women notice them most often on the stomach, breasts and buttocks. Fresh reddish streaks quietly turn white in about a year. It seems paradoxical, but stretch marks mostly appear in puberty or in your 20s and 30s, when the skin is still elastic. The reason is simple: that’s when cells grow fastest, and the cells that produce collagen can’t keep up. In your 40s the skin is already looser and new marks appear less often.

Heredity plays a part too. Some experts believe that people with thinner skin that tans easily get more streaks than people with thicker skin. In people with a fair complexion (for example in studies from England and Ireland), the marks are less noticeable. In people with a darker complexion, they tend to do the opposite — darken and stand out more.

Stretch mark creams: what works?

Honestly: there is no miracle cure. Moisturizing the skin may not prevent marks, but it certainly won’t hurt. Cosmetics makers promise a lot — coconut oils, gels, lotions. It’s worth remembering that a cosmetic product isn’t the same as a medicine, and effectiveness varies from product to product.

If you’re considering a product, check the ingredients and independent test results on the manufacturer’s website. One of the ingredients that has been mentioned is DMAE (dimethylaminoethanol) — but some experts say its effect lasts only about 24 hours and gives no result in the longer term.

Retin-A cream is also popular; it reaches the deeper layers of the skin and stimulates collagen production. It isn’t recommended for a long course of treatment or during pregnancy.

Lasers, peels and quick cover-ups

Laser treatment is subject to the same dispute: some experts say there is no benefit, while others describe results of up to 80% improvement. Laser stimulates collagen production in the tissue. The golden rule — the fresher the mark, the better it responds to treatment. An old white streak is much more stubborn.

Results have also been achieved with acid peels, such as Blue Peel, which contains tricarboxylic acid. During the procedure, cream is applied to the area with the marks and, after 5 minutes, an additional layer. The cream turns the skin bluish, which helps the cosmetician judge the depth of the mark. The cream is then washed off and the procedure is repeated after two weeks. The treated area reacts like a sunburn — it heals and recovers with new skin. This method works above all when the mark is less than a year old.

If your budget is tight and you’re short on time, you can simply cover up stretch marks. Dermablend is a popular brand — sweat- and waterproof. Another trick is self-tanning cream: if the skin around the mark is darker, the streak is less noticeable.

Stretch marks FAQ

Do stretch marks go away on their own?

They don’t disappear completely. The reddish color fades in about a year and the streak turns white — that’s the most visible sign of healing the skin can achieve on its own.

Can I prevent stretch marks with diet?

Not directly. But if you keep weight change under 2% per month and eat enough protein, you put less strain on the skin and give it a better chance to adapt.

When is laser treatment worth considering?

Right after the mark appears, while it’s still fresh and reddish. The older and whiter it is, the smaller the result.

Finally — stretch marks are unavoidable for most women. Stable body weight helps reduce their formation, while sudden changes make things worse. If you already have streaks, it’s worth looking into the laser treatments and acid procedures that clinics offer. You can try store and pharmacy products, but stay skeptical about their promises. And if nothing helps — cover-up options are always there.
