Wisdom and experience build up over time. Here are some thoughts and sayings of my own that I have often caught myself repeating.
Janar Rückenberg:
1. “Everyone who wants to get somewhere or see good results, in any field, actually knows very well what it takes to succeed!”
2. “I am my own business card!”
3. “What has brought me success is that I have never craved or planned any title in advance. My goal has always been to surpass my own best shape, level and results!”
4. “One of the hallmarks of a beginner is definitely the belief that success, progress and development are linear!”
5. “Getting into contest shape in bodybuilding is very much like peeling a potato. Anyone can peel a potato, but try peeling it so the peels are thin and as much of the good stuff as possible is left. That is a real art. Anyone can try to burn fat, and any man can get into contest shape, but doing it so the fat burns off and the muscles are kept as much as possible is an art too!”
6. “Give me an unlimited amount of quark and cottage cheese and I will always get into proper shape!”
7. “Over the long term, it is impossible to eat or train in advance or after the fact!”
8. “The father of willpower is dedication, and its mother is patience!”
9. “A person adapts to everything, even heavy overtraining!”
10. “Every time I prepare for a competition, I ask myself again and again why I’m doing this, why I had to take this on once more. I usually get the answer after the last competition, when I walk out of Statoil with a coffee cup in one hand, a double cheeseburger in the other and an apple strudel…”
11. “The human body loves moderation in everything, including training, nutrition and recovery. Changes or deviations from the normal state are usually compensated for in the same volume, only proportionally in the opposite direction. Extreme processes and influences create a pendulum effect.”
12. “It is impossible to get into the best, dry shape without feeling like crap!”
13. “Don’t judge my shape if you see me after a heavy leg workout or after an hour of cardio!”
14. “In bodybuilding it definitely holds true that being in better shape is not always enough to beat the great champions, because you have to beat their names!”
15. “I have always said that anyone can do and endure hard training, but try training intensively and at the limit of your abilities when optimal nutrition is not supporting your efforts and recovery. Few people are able to train intensively on a strict diet and maintain their level, let alone make progress!”
16. I don’t know whether it’s fortunate or unfortunate, but you can’t buy being well trained or willpower, not even for a lot of money. If anything, it’s fortunate that it’s this way!”
