Estonian fitness triumph in Moscow 2002
Estonian fitness celebrated a triumph on 18 May in Moscow, where the W.F.F. European Championships and the NABBA Russian Open Championships brought a strong international field to the stage. The Estonian Fitness Federation’s competitors finished in the top ten, and several came home with medals.
This was no small undertaking. The Estonian team included athletes, assistants, a judge and photographers from several cities: Võru, Tartu, Tallinn and Pärnu. The delegation showed that Estonian fitness was already a force to be taken seriously in 2002, rather than a casual group of amateurs.
Estonian fitness triumph: why the Moscow competition mattered
The Estonian Fitness Federation team at the competition in Moscow on 18 May consisted of Argo Tõruke from Võru, Inna Terasmaa from Tartu, assistant Marko Terasmaa from Tartu, Marek Kalmus from Tartu, Signessa Kalmus from Tartu, Tauno Suits from Tartu, competitor and E.F.F. president Pavel Kossenko from Tallinn, assistant and photographer Galina Belikova from Tallinn, Nikolai Kornõev from Tallinn, Tarmo Tiits from Tallinn, assistant Piret Jaigmaa from Tallinn and E.F.F. secretary general Irene Mikk from Pärnu.
There were 196 competitors from 12 countries. Australia, Italy, Hungary, Israel, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and Armenia were represented. There were 9 judges in total, and this time Estonia also had a representative on the international judging panel: Irene Mikk.
Frankly, reading these results today brings home just how much work went into every competition abroad back then. Travel, timing peak condition, stage performance, international rules and nerves. All of it had to be managed without today’s easy access to information and the support of social media.
Estonian fitness triumph in the results
The Estonian team could be pleased with the results, as everyone finished in the top ten. Argo Tõruke won first place in the junior fitness category for athletes aged up to 21. Tarmo Tiits took third place in the performance category. Nikolai Kornõev won first place in the over-30 athletic category. Pavel Kossenko took second place in the over-50 category. Marek Kalmus secured second place in both the W.F.F. and NABBA standings, giving him two second-place finishes in total.
The simple truth is that when every athlete finishes in the top ten, it says more than that they had a good day. It speaks to a culture of training, preparation and Estonia’s presence on the fitness scene at the time.

How the Estonian team stood out on stage
A fitness competition is about more than muscle and diet. On stage, you also need to show control, posture, movement and an understanding of your category. In Moscow, competitors were judged on their condition and stage performance, and the Estonian team was consistent in both respects.
Argo Tõruke’s win in junior classic fitness showed the quality of the next generation. Nikolai Kornõev confirmed that Estonian athletes could also compete in the over-30 age group. Marek Kalmus’s two second-place finishes were particularly telling because they came in different categories. His condition stood up to scrutiny beyond a single narrow category.
In the women’s competition, Signessa Kalmus and Inna Terasmaa represented Estonia in strong categories. Their placings may not sound as impressive on paper as a gold medal, but 7th place against tough international competition is a meaningful achievement.

What to remember about this competition
The 2002 competition in Moscow is a good reminder that the history of fitness in Estonia did not begin with social media. Before today’s competition videos and fast-moving news feeds, athletes put in the work just as they do now: they trained, traveled to the venue, stepped on stage and let the judges decide.
The international judges included BURINSKIJ OLEG, KOVALKO TATJANA, MIKK IRENE, DAUBARAS EDMUNDAS, SCHLEGER MARCUS, BURINSKAJA MARINA, MURNIKOVIENE NATALIJA, CHIZOV DMITRIJ, MILIUKOV SERGEJ, NIKULIN NIKOLAJ, ARUSHANIAN JURIJ, DEMICHENKO MARINA, LUNIN OLEG, PURCHA JELENA and RYBAKOV ALEXANDER. The competition secretary was GALINA BELIKOVA (ESTONIA), the competition’s chief judge was BASOV ANDREJ (RUSSIA), and the WFF-INTERNATIONAL vice president was EDMUNDAS DAUBA.
So what actually happened? Estonia’s athletes did more than simply put their names on the entry list in Moscow. They won categories, brought home medals and left a series of names in the results that deserve to be remembered in the history of Estonian fitness.
