Controlling temptation: healthy snacks for hunger cravings

Do you believe in better physical shape? Yes, you do, reads an ad published in a magazine that tries to convince people that aromatherapy works for weight loss. The ad claims that when temptation strikes, aromatherapy triggers a false feeling of fullness in your body.

Unfortunately, all those tricks for controlling your temptation (aromatherapy, gulping down water, going for walks, waiting for the craving to pass, etc.) sometimes make things worse and will probably lead you down exactly the opposite nutritional path. If you truly need something sweet, salty or crunchy, here are a few suggestions that cause only mild guilt and satisfy that nagging urge.

“Gnawing hunger is terribly annoying. I hate that when I open the fridge, I can’t eat whatever catches my eye,” admits IFBB pro fitness competitor Jennifer Hendershott. Since Jennifer spends about eight months of the year on a diet, they have found a new strategy for resisting temptation. “My favorites are apples, animal-shaped chocolate cookies, Orville Redenbacher’s cheddar cheese rice cakes and plain popcorn. Honestly, those are the only things I can allow myself during hunger cravings without feeling guilty.

If it’s the final two weeks before the show, even those have to go – no cheating yourself,” says Jennifer. “On those challenging days,” they explain, “test your ability and push yourself by trying not to cheat. Hunger cravings are temporary; guilt lasts longer.”

Two-time Fitness Olympia champion Susie Curry also has a few foods to turn to when temptation starts showing its ugly face. Usually, when Susie wants a nibble, it’s crunchy unsalted pretzel sticks (rings). If that isn’t enough, Susie eats another handful of nuts. As for chocolate cravings, a chocolate protein bar or shake as a supplement does the job.

For a few more examples of innocent snacks, try the following suggestions from Linda McDonalds, editor-in-chief of the news magazine Supermarket Savvy.

Crunchy snacks:

Cornflakes with a cup of tea
Salted crackers dipped in applesauce or low-fat yogurt
Rice cakes with a glass of fat-free milk
Crispbread with a light dip

Sweet snacks:

Banana with a little chocolate syrup
Graham crackers
Tortilla (filled with apple pieces and sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar), rolled up and heated in the microwave.
Apples with nut butter (a small amount)
Fruit
