Endla Vaher’s travel diary from the World Championships in Mexico

Endla Vaher reports from the fitness world championships in Mexico, with a 32-hour journey, travel mishaps and preparations for the competition.

Hello everyone! Here’s our travel diary 🙂

Our trip to Mexico went very well, apart from the fact that it took us 32 hours to get from Tallinn to our hotel in Morelia. That was from five in the morning (02.10) until one in the afternoon (03.10), Estonian time. We arrived in Mexico City at 18:30 Mexican time and 02:30 Estonian time. An hour and a half later, the bus was full of athletes, but we couldn’t leave because we had to wait for the other bus. We set off at 21.30 (05:30).

By 22.30, we were already making our first half-hour stop. The driver said Morelia was now just four hours away. We thought it wouldn’t be too bad if we got to Morelia at 02:30, but of course we didn’t. Just before Morelia, the driver made another half-hour stop. It was already 03:40 (11:40), and Morelia was supposedly 20min away. After reaching Morelia 40min later and driving around, the driver realised he was lost and turned around, but he wouldn’t call anyone. We passed several hotels, hoping each one would be ours. All the athletes on both buses were tired and hungry—you know the feeling 🙂 When we reached the top of a hill somewhere, the driver realised he was lost again and turned the bus around, with the other bus following us. We drove for another 20min, and one of the hotels we’d passed earlier, which I’d spotted through the darkness and the bus’s tinted windows, turned out to be ours 🙂 The 20min from our last stop had turned into 1 hour and 20min.

We arrived at the hotel to find a crowd of people bustling about and jostling for space. By acting quickly, and because there were so few of us Estonians, we got our room promptly. We got to bed just before six in the morning. We woke up at nine and went to eat, only to be told that breakfast was free only until nine and we would now have to pay. After we asked nicely and explained how late we’d arrived at the hotel, they let us eat after all.
And that’s not where the adventures end 🙂 We’re certainly having plenty of laughs 🙂

At breakfast, we also met Endla’s coach, Lubo, and his other athlete, Dominica, who has just gone downstairs with Endla to practise. Since there are only two competitors in Endla’s category and four in the up to 163 category, the junior fitness competition will probably take place only on Sunday. So Endla will have one more day to prepare, although it won’t be easy. Endla looks fantastic, and at registration yesterday, her abs caused quite a stir among the men again :).

Enjoy training as much as we do!
