How should we assess Estonian athletes’ performances at international championships?

For the third year running, we can happily say, “It was our most successful year ever!” Adding the World Cup and Nordic Championships medals to those won at the World and European Championships brings the total brought home to Estonia to an impressive 17 medals! As we know, Estonia’s last and only IFBB world title came in women’s bodybuilding, won by Inna Uit in 1996. This year, no fewer than two names joined the list!

World Championships: gold for Oleg Anissimov and Taavi Koovit, silver for Natalia Nazarenko-Kiivikas. Fifth-place finishes for Raigo Kuusnõmm, Imre Vähi and Janar Rückenberg

European Championships: two golds for Natalia Nazarenko-Kiivikas, silver for Oleg Anissimov.

World Cup: gold for Ott Kiivikas, Esta Pilt and Oleg Anissimov, silver for Kristina Koroljak, bronze for Oleg Anissimov and Merike Sula

Nordic Championships: silver for Ott Kiivikas, Rain Kuusnõmm and Imre Vähi, bronze for Raigo Kuusnõmm and Marti Taru.

Bodybuilding and fitness coach qualification courses took place in Tallinn on 18–20 March and 9–11 September.

Coach certification exams were held on 2 April and 17 September. In spring, 41 people took the exam and 30 passed (73 %): level I 18, level II 10, level III 1 and level IV 1. In autumn, 23 people took the exam and 12 passed (52 %): level I 10 and level II 2.

Developing young talent. Youth training groups ran at Reval-Sport in Tallinn (coaches Ott Kiivikas and Rauno Rikberg), Sparta in Tallinn (coaches Marek Morozov, Argo Ader and Taavi Koovit) and Planet Sport in Tartu (coach Imre Vähi).

On the organizational front, the highlight was successfully hosting the World Championships and World Cup. The IFBB gave the staging of the competitions high marks. Presenting athletic fitness to the IFBB leadership and international judging panel was a milestone. In effect, it meant recognition for the new discipline and its inclusion in the championship program.

Five new international judges: Aire Lossmann, Marek Morozov, Anu Otsus, Liisa Otsus, Laura Reisalu. The World Championships / World Cup in Tallinn also proved pleasingly successful for our judges taking their qualification tests.

The fight against doping. A total of 7 out-of-competition tests were carried out on 5 athletes: Taavi Koovit (March and September), Aimar Kuusnõmm (March and September), Ivo Pärle (February), Nikolai Kornõšev (March), Mikk Raudsepp (September). All samples tested negative.

There were two cases of refusal to provide a doping control sample: Jüri Leinvald (19.01) and Dmitri Sokolov (09.04).

The Estonian Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel imposed two-year competition bans on Jüri Leinvald (29.03.2011 to 28.03.2013) and Dmitri Sokolov (13.06.2011 to 12.06.2013).

The Estonian Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation paid for 20 doping tests at the World Championships and World Cup in Tallinn. This is the highest number of tests carried out at major championships in recent years. Samples were also provided by 5 Estonian athletes (Taavi Koovit, Janar Rückenberg, Imre Vähi, Merike Sula, Oleg Anissimov). All samples tested negative.
