Estonian Cup 2004 recap
The Estonian Cup 2004 brought bodybuilding and fitness to the TTÜ sports hall on 03 April, with a very different atmosphere from the usual theater venue. Here is a clear overview of who shone on stage, where the competition was tight and how the official results stacked up.
The Estonian Cup at the TTÜ sports hall
This time, the competition took place at a venue that felt somewhat unfamiliar to spectators. The TTÜ sports hall is no theater, the setting where bodybuilding and fitness competitions had often been held, but the stage, lighting and organization came together to make the event work. Video projection helped spectators in the side stands follow the action and understand what was being judged in each round.
As usual, the competition opened with the youth and junior divisions. There were no more and no fewer than 4 competitors in total. Sadly, only one man took to the stage in the junior division: Mihhail Gromov from Narva. Narva was once something of a mecca for Estonian bodybuilders, so his competition debut and Estonian overall cup title fitted that story nicely. Not a bad start.
How the Estonian Cup unfolded on stage
One of the day’s most exciting contests came in women’s fitness. Estonia’s two leading competitors in the discipline were both there: multiple Estonian champion Jaana Junson and Kardi Kuusik, who had been crowned champion in the autumn in Junson’s absence. Both received first-place scores from the judges, but when all nine judges’ scores were tallied, Jaana Junson of Pärnu’s Mai-Sport came out on top.
There were two competitors on stage in women’s bodybuilding. Estonian champion Esta Pilt faced first-time competitor Merike Sula, who showed good conditioning. There was no major upset, however. The more experienced Esta Pilt took the cup title.
During the interval, Joel Juht, the best robot dancer in the Baltic states, took to the stage. His impressive performance gave the audience a breather before the men’s categories. Some men’s categories were combined: the only -70 kg competitor, Tarmo Tiits, appeared alongside the men in the -80kg category. It was the – 80kg class that gave the judges a difficult task. With the field so closely matched, selected competitor numbers were repeatedly called out for comparisons in the mandatory poses.
In the end, however, the decision was unanimous. First place went to Andrei Abrosimov of Tartu ÜK Sports Club. Imre Vähi finished second; the report also described him as a man already known as the perennial runner-up. Third place went to Margus Karulaas, making his competitive debut.
Winners, the overall category and doping control
There were no major surprises in the men’s weight categories. In the – 90 kg category, 5-time Estonian overall champion Ott Kiivikas of Reval Sport won convincingly ahead of Sillamäe athlete Oleg Fjodorov. In the men’s heavyweight category, Marek Kalmus of Arctic in Tartu added another trophy to his collection. Aleksander ?evtsov finished second and Lennart Männiste third.
The winners of all four men’s categories were called to the stage for the overall title. Once again, Ott Kiivikas emerged victorious, claiming his third overall cup title. Marek Kalmus finished second and Andrei Abrosimov third. The top three in the men’s overall category also underwent doping control. The official afterparty was held at club BonBon.
All in all, it was a solid competition. EKFL thanked the supporters and fans who made the event possible. There was also anticipation for the autumn, with talk of a possible record number of competitors.
