The festival is over, the festival goes on

The Grillfest sports festival in 2003 drew enthusiastic crowds for strength contests and the Eesti Jaan and Jaanika competition in Estonia.

Festival lõppes, festival kestab

Grillfest 2003 helped launch Robocop’s new event, Eesti Jaan ja Jaanika. Around six hundred people came to take part in Pärnu. In the festive atmosphere, the urge to get involved and test their abilities—with a little vanity thrown in—won out. Bodybuilding champion and host Ott Kiivikas, one of the people behind the idea, had every reason to be pleased. People came and joined in.
The photo gallery selected by Amazon’s publisher Arnold Tokko should bear this out and capture the atmosphere that comes with getting involved in strength sports.

Ants Rosenbaum, head judge of the sports program, confirms that the self-checks—weigh-ins and body fat percentage measurements—were popular too. People were, of course, prepared to face the finding that, on average, two out of three of us are indeed overweight.
It was great to see people tiring of standing in front of the main stage and coming over to the sports area to refresh themselves. This went on every day from three in the afternoon until midnight or even later. While the Estonian Olympic Committee is currently struggling to get Sport for All off the ground across Estonia, in Pärnu it seemed to happen effortlessly, at least in these sports. I have long been convinced that instead of dragging people to a stadium for a sports day, we should serve up sports on a platter at an event they already enjoy.

The women’s enthusiasm was a pleasant surprise. Probably every third participant was a member of the fairer sex—if that term can even be used in this field. A special prize went to Pärnu’s Tiiu Kimber, our Estonian powerlifting champion and an accomplished athlete from whom younger competitors could learn a great deal. Above all, they could learn from her attitude toward sport and her creativity.
The Jaanika title, however, went to Elva homemaker Maarika Gimbutas. She secured her few-point lead over fitness competitor Irene Mikk in the final event, beer drinking. Gerbel Mikk, competing on home turf, finished third.
Tartu’s Marko Terasmaa, powerlifting coach to his record-holding ex-wife Inna, left Estonia’s summer capital with the Jaan title. Tallinn shot putter Roland Mändla (17.36 this year) and powerlifter Rauno Heinla from Kõrveküla battled for second place. The athletics competitor prevailed by a point.
Overall, the combined competition turned into something of a Tartu–Pärnu showdown, with no real losers.

Familiar faces from fields other than sport also took to the competition area. Ladies’ favorite Erich Krieger from Flexer skillfully juggled a kettlebell and praised the organizers. The next day, Krieger was competing in Haapsalu, where he won the two-pood(32kg) kettlebell snatch event. As he put it, all it took on that occasion was ” 33 reps “. Rannamäe, Rutik and one of the hosts, Urmas Vaino, were in no hurry to repeat that feat, but they did have a go themselves, albeit without trying to get their names on the results sheet.
Veronika Milovanova also stood out as an enthusiastic participant, trying everything on offer.
It remains to add that the event’s main sponsor was VDO Dayton, which provided car stereos for the winners. Viru Valge, AleCoq and Robocop also contributed prizes.
