…and in sports in general.
Here is a collection of very interesting sayings by various people, about bodybuilding as well as sport in general. Some are quite good and interesting. As you read them, think about them too. Please forgive us if some of the wording is a little clumsy; quotes like these, and their meaning, are very hard to convey linguistically. Enjoy the read:
“I don’t do it for my health, I do it to get big muscles.” Markus Ruhl.
“My training philosophy is this… I train as hard as I can, because the other competitors are training hard too.” Dennis Wolf.
“I know so much about what I don’t need, yet so little about what I could know and need to know. That is the problem for most bodybuilding addicts.” Stuart McRobert.
“Every single workout is like a brick in a building under construction, and every time you do a poor workout or skip one, you leave another brick unlaid in that building.” Dorian Yates.
“If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get the result you’ve always gotten.” Ronnie Coleman.
“I’ll compete again when they start testing the judges too.” Mike Mentzer.
“Very soon I’ll be on stage with a physique that is very close to perfection.” Chris Cormier.
“If you’re a beginner, don’t train the way bodybuilders train. Train like powerlifters and eat like bodybuilders.” Anonymous.
“Having a vision creates belief. Belief creates willpower and removes anxiety and doubt… only absolute confidence remains.” Arnold Schwarzenegger.
“I’m not the man who tries to dodge raindrops just to stay dry. Quite often, to reach your destination, you have to get soaked.” Erik Frankhouser.
“Don’t destroy, stimulate.” Lee Haney (apparently a saying about how training should treat the body).
“There’s no point in living if you don’t (can’t) deadlift.” Jon Pal Sigmarsson.
From the translator: as far as I know, the man died in his own gym while doing a deadlift, from a heart attack.
“Dorian Yates and I have nothing at all in common. In physical terms, he’s a Volkswagen and I’m a Porsche.” Shawn Ray.
“Bodybuilding… is the art of achieving maximum results with minimum effort.” V. I. Dubinin, President of the Russian Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation. The point being that it makes no difference what means you use to train yourself big and muscular.)
“I’ve trained for so long that testing the limits of my capability has become part of my nature.” Ronnie Coleman.
“Everyone has a big strategy and solid plans until they get ‘beaten up.’” Mike Tyson.
“I don’t believe in bodybuilders who use steroids. If a man doesn’t have enough natural testosterone in his blood to build a powerful, muscular body without substances, he might as well take up ping-pong.” Steve Reeves.
“Put the most effort into the people you know.” Nasser El Sonbaty.
“One of life’s greatest experiences is achieving the goals you’ve set for yourself that others considered impossible for you.” Robert Cheeke.
“What matters is not the size of the weight, but the quality of the movement (the execution).” Porter Cortrell.
“Some people think big, other people are big.” Jeremy Loenneke.
“Thank God the fans aren’t the judges.” Michael Jackson.
“I can accept failure, everyone fails at something, but I can’t accept not trying.” Michael Jordan.
“Fitness – if it were sold in a bottle in a shop, everyone would have a great body and look fantastic.” Cher.
“There are no shortcuts to any place worth going.” Beverly Sills.
“The fact that the triceps happens to be on the back of the arm is no reason to train it less or to treat triceps workouts as secondary.” Ronnie Coleman.
“With my looks I’m my own business card; nobody could probably picture me any other way.” Janar Rückenberg. I’ve found that I’ve said this to a great many people in a great many situations. I suppose I can consider it my famous line.
