Home workouts: work out without leaving home

Want a lean, toned body without leaving home? Working out at home is actually often more effective than going to the gym — researchers have shown that people who exercise at home are more committed and stick to their training routines more consistently. As a result, they may also lose weight faster than those who go to a fitness club. Of course, clubs attract plenty of members because they make working out easy — everything you need is there. But you can easily make your home workouts just as effective by using these tried-and-tested gym secrets.

1. Invest in the essentials

A high-tech home gym would certainly be great, but you don’t have to spend a fortune to get good results. What you need is variety — in both your cardio and strength training equipment. Start with a treadmill — one of the best exercise machines. You can use it for walking or running, increase the speed and add an incline. A completely new workout every time! Next, buy 3 pairs of dumbbells (you should be able to lift the lightest pair with proper form). To keep things from getting repetitive, add workout videos, a stability ball, resistance bands or tubes, and a jump rope to your shopping basket.

2. Keep your equipment within easy reach

Take a cue from a health club. Put your treadmill in front of the TV or your favorite picture, but not in the basement. It doesn’t have to be in the middle of the living room, but it should always be in sight. Keep spare weights in a basket next to the TV and tie resistance bands to the refrigerator door.

3. Carve out time just for yourself

Schedule your workouts so you don’t have to worry about interruptions from the children, the phone, the plumber or the dog. Avoid busy times, such as just before school or dinner. If that isn’t possible, set a fixed workout time and let your family or housemates know so they won’t disturb you. Turn off your phone, hang a DO NOT DISTURB sign on the door and close it.

4. Keep healthy food handy

The low-calorie muesli bars sold at the gym make healthy snacking easy. Do the same at home — stock your refrigerator and kitchen cupboards with energy-rich but diet-friendly foods to eat before and after your workouts. Put fresh fruit on the table and keep chilled bottled water handy. Throw out the chips and candy, or at least put them out of sight. Small changes in your food choices can make a big difference in helping you stick to your training commitments.
