Training at home: how to get started the smart way
Training at home starts with your furniture
Training at home doesn’t require any special equipment, because you can start with your own bodyweight and make use of the furniture you already have at home. For example, take your dining chairs and use them for step-ups. You can step up onto a chair and back down again, training your leg muscles. You can also sit on a chair, straighten your back and lift your straight legs – this is a very good exercise for training your abdominal muscles. Even the sofa has its uses. Since sofas are usually soft, we recommend using them for relaxing or, at a push, for training your triceps. There are plenty of ways to start training with your bodyweight. Various exercises can also be done lying on a mat, without using any of the furniture or other aids you might have at home.
Start slowly
If you haven’t worked out in a long time, you need to start slowly. It’s best to consult a trainer who can help you put together a home plan to follow gradually, because that way you make sure you don’t hurt yourself and you move sensibly toward the goals you want to achieve. If that isn’t possible at first, look up free training videos to follow along with. You can find them on YouTube as well as on other social media channels. Pick a training program you like and start doing it. Many sports apps let you set the intensity and goals of your training yourself, and then create a plan that suits you. This is a very good way to start slowly, without overdoing it.
Turn training into a routine
The most important thing in training is regularity – it should become your routine, something you do a couple of times a week. The beginning is hard, but you can get through it. We know you can! For sport to become a routine that’s hard to live without, you should work out consistently for about 1-2 months in a row. After that you’ll notice that both your well-being and your mood have improved, and you’ll be happy to work out.
If you need an extra push and some motivation, bring your partner or good friends into your training. Doing it together motivates both sides, and it’s not so easy to skip sessions. Good music or listening to different podcasts always helps too. A workout is a good way not only to boost your vitality, but also to pick up new knowledge, or simply to rest and enjoy your favorite music.
Don’t forget nutrition
You may notice that you’re hungry after a workout. That’s normal, because you’ve worked hard and burned calories doing your exercises. Since your energy needs are higher on training days, you need to eat more on those days too. For example, before a workout you can have a sandwich with peanut butter to be ready for the effort. After training, have a refreshing smoothie, to which you can also add protein powder.
Exercise is a very important part of our health, and not only physical but also mental. We’re sure that once you start and push through the first two months, you’ll come to love exercise! Good luck!
