Jay Cutler — professional bodybuilder
Jay Cutler is one of the best-known bodybuilders in the world. A four-time Mr. Olympia winner, Cutler built a career that proved consistency and hard work can beat even the genes you were born with — and that recovering from setbacks is just as important as reaching the top.
Jay Cutler’s personal details
Jason Isaac Cutler was born on August 3, 1973, in Worcester, Massachusetts. Height is about 177 cm (5’10”), competition weight 119–121.5 kg and off-season weight up to 130.5 kg. Cutler lives in Las Vegas and is married to Kerry. Two dogs: Scraps and Trace.
Biggest fear? Ending a career with an injury. The sources of motivation are clear: wife Kerry, nutritionist Chris Aceto, family, friends, sponsors and training partners. The biggest challenge is staying focused and sticking to the diet even when travel or business disrupts the routine.
Cutler’s role models came from close to home — brothers Bob (43), Keith (42) and Randall (40) had a huge influence while Cutler was growing up. In other people, Cutler admires those who never quit halfway. Envy, on the other hand, is the trait Cutler tolerates least.
Jay Cutler’s journey into bodybuilding
The first competition was in May 1992 at the Gold Gym Classic in Worcester. Cutler was only 18 years old, weighed 85.5 kg and immediately took 2nd place in the men’s division. Not a bad start.
An early role model was Bob Paris, whose training book “Beyond Built” taught Cutler how to train. Cutler liked Paris’s look, and the book proved to be a good starting point for the whole journey.
Bodybuilding has made Cutler a stronger, more confident person. A big dreamer as a child — bodybuilding provided the means to make those dreams come true. The biggest achievement outside competition: a business built from the ground up that could provide a living even without a competitive career.
According to Cutler, Las Vegas is an ideal environment for doing business. It’s fun to dip into the nightlife, but just as easy to stay away from it — a balance the bodybuilder appreciates.
Jay Cutler’s career highlights
Two highlights stand out: the 2000 Night of Champions and the 2002 Arnold Classic. The NOC win came after a disheartening 15th place at the 1999 Mr. Olympia — Cutler felt reborn. That result put Cutler on the list of top bodybuilders and proved that a slump can be a springboard.
In 2002, Cutler lost to Chris Cormier at the Arnold Classic. Yet that defeat showed Cutler was no flash in the pan — success was still possible later, as the 2001–2003 Mr. Olympia contests showed.
Cutler’s assessments of competitors are honest and blunt. In Cutler’s eyes, Ronnie Coleman is one of the most dedicated athletes. Chris Cormier has the most genetic potential, but doesn’t always manage to make full use of it. Shawn Ray gets under people’s skin — Cutler believes Ray will eventually end up isolated in bodybuilding. Craig Titus has finally figured out what they want, and that helps them commit 100% to their goals.
What would Cutler like to change in bodybuilding? That all professional athletes get a salary and health insurance. The goal for the future is to be a good ambassador for the sport: to prove that bodybuilding means hard work, sacrifice and dedication.
