What to wear to strip aerobics class? Layered, stretchy and more feminine than a regular gym kit. A practical guide for beginners.

When heading to a strip aerobics class, every newcomer is thinking about one thing: what to wear so that it’s comfortable to move, yet you still feel good when you look at yourself in the mirror. The short answer: layered, stretchy and a little more feminine than regular gym gear. The longer answer is below.

Why strip aerobics in the first place?

Strip aerobics has become very popular in Estonian fitness clubs in recent years, and the studios are usually full. The reason is simple: it’s a dance-based, feminine and fun change of pace from regular strength or cardio training. The movements are slow and seductive, and the choreography is easy to follow even for those who have never danced before.

Class usually begins with a warm-up to slower music. Next come hip movements, cat-like, sinuous steps and a lesson in how to walk a little more alluringly. Within two or three classes, everyone usually has the basic steps down. It doesn’t require any dance background — only a willingness to feel a bit freer.

What to wear to a strip aerobics class: the ground rules

Honestly, a regular gym kit works too, but in this class it just ends up looking too sporty. I recommend three ground rules:

  1. Layered. At least two or three layers — something has to be removable and usable during the dance.
  2. Stretchy and comfortable. A material that moves with you and doesn’t pinch.
  3. More feminine than a regular workout. A tennis skirt, shorts, dance tights — all of these look better in the mirror than thick tracksuits.

Layers you can take off

Striptease literally means undressing in a sexy way, so the choreography uses it as a style element too. Some good “extra layers” to make use of in the choreography:

  • A thin sweatshirt or dance jacket for the warm-up
  • A baseball cap
  • Gloves
  • Leg warmers
  • A tie or scarf

You don’t need everything at once — one or two items that you can remove effectively during class are already enough.

The base outfit underneath

Your base outfit should be made of stretchy material and be comfortable: leggings, dance tights, a tennis skirt or dress, shorts. In a dancewear shop you’ll find nice dance skirts with built-in shorts — a practical solution so you don’t have to worry about covering up when you move in a skirt.

Footwear

There are two good options when it comes to footwear. Dance sneakers are comfortable and have soft soles, so they suit a beginner very well. The real experience, however, comes with dance shoes — a small heel instantly changes your posture and the line of your movements. If you haven’t danced in heels before, start with sneakers and try heels once the basic steps are clear.

Practical tips for your first time

A few things worth knowing before your first class:

  • Arrive a little early. Combining layers in the changing room takes more time than in a regular workout.
  • Bring a water bottle. The tempo is slower, but the class still lasts a full 45–60 minutes.
  • Hair down or loosely tied back. A tight ponytail doesn’t work well with the movements — it’s better to leave it a bit looser.
  • Don’t wear anything too baggy the first time. A wide T-shirt will get in the way during the movements.
  • Makeup and styled hair aren’t mandatory. But if it makes you feel more confident — why give it up?

A simple truth: most women who come for the first time fear that they’ll be the clumsiest in the room. In reality, the room is full of beginners just like you. The instructors know this and teach the steps slowly and repeatedly.

FAQ about strip aerobics outfits

Do I have to come in heels?

No. Dance sneakers are perfectly suitable, especially for a beginner. Heels add style, but not until the basic steps have become a habit.

How thick should my bra be?

Choose a sturdy sports bra — the movements are slow, but the work of the hips and body is constant. Comfort always comes before style.

Do I have to take anything “sexy” off?

No. Strip aerobics doesn’t involve actually undressing — using layers is simply an element of the choreography. You take off a jacket, gloves or a hat, nothing more.
