Estonian Nutrition Therapy Association Nutrition Pyramid

The ETTA nutrition pyramid takes the traditional diet of the Mediterranean countries as one of its most important models, but it also draws on other, more recent evidence-based principles of healthy eating, including the national nutrition recommendations of the Nordic countries and Estonia, as well as various scales for assessing the healthiness and quality of nutrition.

The nutrition recommendations reflected in the pyramid are aimed primarily at healthy people who eat a mixed diet, but they can also be applied by vegetarians if adjustments are made to account for the specifics of their eating style (replacing animal foods with plant-based alternatives and increasing the amounts from these food groups).

The base of the pyramid is the sun as a source of vitamin D, water as a thirst quencher, sufficient physical activity, and activities with friends and loved ones that bring positive emotions. Just as important are the right balance between work and rest, deep sleep, and avoiding excessive stress as well as relieving stress.

When illness is present, nutrition planning must also take individual needs into account, based on the specifics of the particular health condition
