Kristjan-Johannes Konsap and bodybuilding
Kristjan-Johannes Konsap is an Estonian bodybuilder who took up the sport early and was already in his ninth year of training at 23. Drawing on his answers, this article explores how he gets into contest condition, what keeps him motivated and what young athletes can learn from his journey.
Why Kristjan-Johannes Konsap chose bodybuilding
His interest in bodybuilding did not come out of nowhere. Kristjan-Johannes Konsap has said that his direct inspiration was one of his relatives, whose muscularity and leanness struck him as impressive. He also found role models among the Estonian and international muscle men he saw on television.
It is a familiar starting point for many. Someone around you shows that consistent work really can change your body. From there, you have to decide for yourself: will you remain an interested observer, or keep working out even after that initial enthusiasm fades?
Kristjan has become Estonian youth champion and cup winner in bodybuilding. Those results do not happen by chance. Bodybuilding depends on a routine maintained over years: training, food, sleep, recovery and bringing your physique into contest condition at the right time.
What it really takes to get into contest condition
Pre-contest conditioning takes considerable effort, he says. His point, in essence, is this: with my metabolism, dieting and achieving good contest condition is not easy. But it is still possible if he puts in enough effort.
That is a simple truth of bodybuilding: you do not build your physique in the final week. You need to have built the muscle mass to show on stage well in advance. Dieting reveals it, but cannot replace years of work.
Of his coaches, Kristjan has consulted his first coach, Ott Kiivikas, the most. With considerable experience behind him, he generally puts together his own nutrition plans and training programs. During the competition season, he has also worked with other top Estonian bodybuilders, for example to practice posing.
His next goal was to make the leap from the junior division to the men’s level. Specifically, he aimed to be competitive in men’s classic bodybuilding in the spring of 2014. His ultimate goal? A European championship title. You need to aim high; otherwise, it is hard to keep working toward the same goal for years.
Kristjan-Johannes Konsap’s training and nutrition routine
Is bodybuilding a job or a hobby? His answer falls somewhere between the two, but leans toward a hobby. The two worlds are closely connected, though. He would not work in the field if he did not enjoy the sport itself.
Motivation does not mean finding a new grand slogan every day. He does not need extra motivation to maintain his usual routine because it is already an established habit. Feeling good after a tough or successful workout provides a boost in itself.
He uses quite a few supplements. Those mentioned include Whey+ and Dextro as a post-workout protein-carbohydrate drink, along with the amino acid products Amino Rush and Intra, creatine and beta-alanine, depending on the phase of training. During the competition season, fat burners also come into play.
His daily diet follows a set structure. Breakfast is eggs with porridge or bread, and coffee. During the day, he has 2 meals of meat, raw vegetable salad and carbohydrates such as rice, buckwheat or pasta. He also has 2 servings of cottage cheese or quark, with a carbohydrate source or raw vegetable salad. It may not sound fancy, but that consistency is precisely why it works.
What young athletes can learn from this
Kristjan encourages young athletes starting out to make the effort to read up on the sport. First, you need to understand the fundamentals of bodybuilding training. Then you need the patience to follow them for years and decades on end.
Frankly, that is better advice than yet another promise of getting into shape quickly. There is no miracle solution. Dubious sources that promise rapid success or make a big deal of minor details often lead beginners astray.
Recovery is part of the picture too. To relax, he likes to step away from his usual routine: a good film, good food and some quiet time at home. For recovery from training, he also visits aquatic centers and massage therapists when he can.
When it comes to his ideal physique, he has no single idol. He looks to the men’s finalists at the European and World Championships: compact athletes who combine muscle mass, conditioning, proportions and natural physical attributes.
