Spinning in winter: why it’s worth a try

Spinning is one of the easiest ways to keep your cardio fitness up through the Estonian autumn and winter. When it’s slushy and dark outside, the studio is well lit, the music is loud and the temperature is steady. A class keeps your heart rate up, your legs strong and your mind sharp even in the darkest half of the year.

Why spinning works in autumn and winter

Riding a bike outdoors in an Estonian winter is either difficult or simply unpleasant. Darkness, wet roads and a cold wind eat away at the motivation of even the most stubborn. Indoors, none of that applies — you head to the locker room, change, and ten minutes later you’re already pedaling.

Cyclists who go to spinning classes over the winter notice the difference right away in spring. When you get on your bike on the first evening in May, you don’t run out of breath on the very first hill. Your heart has been working all winter.

In addition to cardio fitness, specific muscle groups develop: the quadriceps, glutes and calves. The position over the handlebars also engages the core muscles, especially when the instructor mixes in climbs and standing positions. It’s not just cardio — it’s a full-body effort.

How a spinning class goes

A typical class lasts 45 minutes to an hour. It starts with a light warm-up — low resistance and an easy pace, so your legs and heart can settle into the ride. Then the intervals start to alternate: fast sprints, harder climbs, recovery segments.

A good instructor leads the group with their voice and the music, not just with the numbers on the screen. You can feel when to push and when to catch your breath. You turn the resistance knob yourself — how hard the class actually gets is each person’s own decision. The person next to you may pedal twice as hard or twice as easy, and it changes nothing about your workout.

At the end there’s a cool-down and stretching. In some studios the stretching part lasts ten minutes, in others only a couple. Don’t skip it — after an intense class your legs will definitely be grateful.

Practical tips for your first time

For your first time, it’s worth arriving 15 minutes early. The instructor or front desk staff will help you set the saddle and handlebars to your height. A wrong setup doesn’t just cost you comfort — over the long run it can mess up your knee.

Shorts or snug training leggings and a light T-shirt work well. You’ll sweat a lot — be sure to bring a water bottle and a towel. Some studios offer special spinning shoes with cleats, but regular sneakers are fine for the first few times.

Don’t let the pace of the person next to you pressure you. Spinning is not a competition — your own heart rate and how you feel decide how hard you pedal. If the first class feels too hard, that’s normal. The second and third times already feel much easier.

At Sparta, where the concept of spinning classes largely took root in Estonia, the schedule is on the website and a trial class usually costs a few euros. The same goes for most other sports clubs — the first time, you don’t have to commit to a monthly pass right away.

FAQ on spinning

Is spinning suitable for beginners?

Yes, it is. You adjust the resistance yourself and nobody can see how many turns you’ve made. For a beginner, 30–40 minutes of a class at full effort is enough; the rest of the time you can pedal at a calmer pace.

How often should you do spinning?

Two to three times a week already gives clear results — your endurance improves noticeably within a month. Daily spinning is more for an experienced cyclist than a beginner.

Does spinning help you lose weight?

Yes, especially when combined with a sensible diet. One intense class burns a considerable amount of calories and keeps your metabolism active for a few hours after the workout is over.
