Humans are a process: how the body renews itself

A human being is a process in the most literal sense: the body wears down, repairs itself and rebuilds itself all the time. This isn’t a pretty metaphor but daily work, shaped by food, movement, sleep and age.

Some time ago a simple question began to intrigue me: roughly how quickly does the human body renew itself physically? Probably no one knows the definitive answer, because different tissues behave differently. But you can still get a rough picture.

Why is a human being a process?

It feels to us as though we live in the same body day after day. The mirror confirms that feeling. The name is the same, the face is more or less the same, and so are the habits. Meanwhile, beneath the surface, there is constant turnover.

Metabolism is one of the signs of life. We take in matter from food, water and air, use it, and send part of it out again. The body isn’t a statue carved from stone but a living system. It breaks down and builds up, repairs and adapts.

Various articles circulate the idea that, on average, practically our whole body is renewed in 7-10 years. This shouldn’t be taken as a fact you can time with a stopwatch. It’s more a good reminder: how we live leaves a mark on the body.

How does the human body renew itself?

One telling example is water. About 72% of our body is renewed every 16 days, because 72% of our body is water. Every 16 days, all the water in our body is replaced 100%.

Other tissues are replaced at different speeds too. Some renew quickly, some very slowly and some hardly at all. That’s exactly what makes the topic interesting.

  • The outer surface layer of the skin renews completely every 2-4 weeks.
  • The cellular lining of our stomach wall renews every 5 days.
  • The papillae on the tongue, which contain the receptors that sense and distinguish taste, renew every 10 days.
  • Red blood cells are renewed every 4 months.
  • The lungs’ capacity for regeneration is 2-3 weeks.
  • The liver regenerates itself completely in 2 years.
  • All our nails have been renewed within 6-10 months.
  • Hair is completely replaced in 3-6 years.
  • For a long time it was believed that heart cells don’t regenerate, but in fact the heart has fully regenerated itself in about 20 years.
  • Although the cells of our eyes don’t renew, the cornea renews every 24 hours.
  • Our bones renew in about 10 years.
  • Nerve cells in the brain don’t renew. Brain nerve cells and eye cells other than the cornea are the main ones that stay the same throughout our lives.

Over the years, almost all the atoms in our body are replaced. Not a single atom stays in the body forever. It’s more than likely that the atoms in your body right now were previously part of other people, animals, plants or the environment.

This is where the philosophical twist comes in. If the body’s material is constantly changing, what makes us still us? Memory alone? The nervous system? Habits? Or all of it together?

What can you influence yourself?

In the physical sense, the saying “you are what you eat” holds up quite literally. Body cells die off gradually and are synthesized anew. The building material comes largely from what we eat, what we drink and how we live.

A simple truth: the body can’t build a good result from poor material alone. If your days consist mainly of junk food, cakes and heavily processed foods, the starting point for recovery is one thing. If the table holds meat fillets, root vegetables, vegetables, legumes and other real food, the starting point is another.

That doesn’t mean every bite has to be perfect. Frankly, nobody lives that way. But direction counts. If you want to last longer and function better, it’s worth moving your body regularly, getting enough sleep and giving it food that there’s really something to build from.

Humans, food and the question of consciousness

About 30% of our body by weight isn’t, so to speak, “us”, that is, cells without our DNA/RNA. It’s a meeting place for bacteria, viruses and other unwanted “guests”. With bacteria in particular the picture is surprising: our body contains 10 times more bacterial cells than cells of our own.

So what actually happens? We walk around in a body that is at once our own and in constant exchange with the world around us. We eat, breathe, sweat, recover, age and renew. All of this happens quietly, without us having to think about it every day.

The most important thing isn’t to argue over whether a given organ renews at exactly this speed or slightly differently. In different articles these speeds can vary. What matters is the fact that the body renews itself several times over a lifetime, and we can influence that process with our lifestyle.

Through all of this, one bigger question still fascinates me: if the body is made up of physically existing atoms, how, and at what moment, does consciousness arise inside these stacked-up “little blocks”? No nutrition advice gives a quick answer to that. But it certainly makes you think.

FAQ: humans and the body’s renewal

Does a person really renew themselves every 7-10 years?

That is a rough generalization, not an exact clock inside the body. Some tissues are replaced quickly, others slowly, and some cells last a very long time. The point is that the body does not stay unchanged over time.

Does food affect how the body renews itself?

Yes. The body builds new cells and tissues from the material we give it. That is why ordinary real food, enough protein, vegetables, sleep and movement matter far more than any single miracle fix.

Are all body cells replaced over a lifetime?

No. Nerve cells in the brain and the cells of the eye, apart from the cornea, are the main examples of cells that do not renew themselves in the same way as many other parts of the body.
