How to choose the right sports bra
The right sports bra is one of the simplest ways to protect your body during training. Many women don’t think about it, but the wrong choice affects both comfort and the long-term health of the breasts.
Why is a sports bra so important?
The breasts are attached to the sternum by delicate Cooper’s ligaments. These ligaments are not muscles — you can’t train or strengthen them. Every movement puts a load on this connective tissue, and without support the ligaments gradually stretch.
The simple truth is that you can’t exercise sagging breasts back into shape. Breast tissue contains no muscle, so no training can reverse a change that has already happened. The only solution that works is prevention — that is, wearing a sports bra with adequate support at every workout.
A study carried out at the University of Edinburgh showed that a sports bra reduces breast movement during training by 50%. That means that in every running session, every aerobics class and every jump, the load on the connective tissue is halved. Over time, this makes a noticeable difference.
2/3 of women wear the wrong bra when they exercise. The figure is surprising, but the message is clear: most women underestimate the importance of support.
Shock Absorber’s four-level support system
Shock Absorber is currently the best-selling sports bra brand in England and Finland. It is sold at roughly 5000 points of sale worldwide. The brand has been worn by top athletes Anna Kournikova — also its best-known face — and track and field athletes Sally Gunnell and Jade Johnson.
Shock Absorber uses a unique four-level support system. Every model has a support level (Impact Level) marked on its product label, which shows the training load the bra is designed for. This makes choosing easier: a different level suits low-intensity yoga than running or contact sports.
The choice of materials is just as well thought out. Coolmax and X-static wick moisture away from the body and keep body temperature even — so even during a long, sweaty workout, you stay relatively dry. Sizes go up to a G cup, and a separate model is available for women with a large bust.
How do you choose the right sports bra?
When choosing, you need to consider two main factors: breast size and type of sport. Together, these two conditions determine which support level is right for you.
Low training load: yoga, stretching, walking. Light support is enough here. Medium training load: cycling, swimming, dance workouts. You need a firmer bra. High training load: running, aerobics, jumping, competitive sport. Maximum support is needed here.
A good sports bra fits firmly but doesn’t squeeze. Check that the straps don’t slide up and down during training and that the bottom band doesn’t ripple. If a regular bra feels comfortable but starts to bother you during workouts, it’s time to switch to a sports model.
One practical tip: try jumping and waving your arms in the store while wearing the bra. If that feels embarrassing, remember that those 10 seconds will save you months of discomfort during workouts.
FAQ
Isn’t a regular bra suitable for training?
A regular bra isn’t designed for dynamic movement. It may feel comfortable, but it doesn’t provide enough support for repetitive movements. A sports bra is built for exactly this kind of load.
How often should you replace a sports bra?
Roughly every 6–12 months, depending on how often you train. If the material has started to stretch and the support is weakening, it’s time to get a new one.
How many sports bras should you own?
At least two — so that one can dry properly after a workout. Sports bras are washed more often and are subjected to a greater training load, so they wear out faster than regular garments.
