The Estonian team powerlifting championships in Viljandi produced several strong performances. Reval-Sport took the cup with a team comprising Raul Köster, Janek Nurmeots, Aivar Krupp and Nikolai Nekrassov. Their score of 1815 points was a total no Estonian team had achieved before. The gap between second and third was narrow: the University of Tartu Sports Club scored 1733 points and Saaremaa SK Jõumees 1730. Leading the winning Tallinn team was Raul Köster, the powerlifting federation’s international secretary. Having weighed 8o kilos not long before, he had put himself through a grueling weight cut. This time the scales read 74.5, allowing him to compete in the up to 75 kg class. He set Estonian senior records in the barbell squat with 255.5 (the previous record of 255 kg belonged to Lempu) and the bench press with 175 (improving his own record by 2.5 kilos). Köster deadlifted 270 kg for a total of 700 kilos, becoming the first lifter in his weight class to reach that total. His Wilks score of 501.13 points also meant he met the grandmaster standard for the first time. He added that Reval-Sport, managed by Aldur Paratasjuk, had been very supportive of their preparations. All four had been given enough time and access to weights to reach their current level.

Saaremaa’s Margus Reek and Tartu’s Erkki Laiv also performed particularly well at the championships. Competing in the up to 100 kg class, Reek set Estonian junior records with a deadlift of 290 and a total of 745 kilos. His fellow 22-year-old Laiv set junior records in the up to 125 kg class with a deadlift of 260, a bench press of 210 and a total of 722.5 kilos. Saaremaa’s Eero Ilvest has developed into a talented lifter. The 19-year-old set a junior deadlift record of 270 kilos in the up to 82.5 kg class. Margus Silbaum, who will be chasing another World Championships medal in November, did not compete himself. His athletes at Ai-Petri, however, have made considerable progress. Raul Köster said his sights were set on the 2003 World Championships in Denmark. There is still a year of waiting and training ahead.
