Estonia’s Strongest Man 2004: The Tartu duel
Estonia’s Strongest Man 2004 took place in Tartu’s Town Hall Square, with the contest revolving around the duel between Tarmo Mitt and Andrus Murumets. On Sunday, July 25, spectators witnessed six events, plenty of tension and, ultimately, a margin of just 0.18 sec. in the decisive showdown.
What made Estonia’s Strongest Man 2004 so memorable?
Town Hall Square is no stadium or indoor arena. Spectators are right next to the competitors, with a clear view of every attempt and even the slightest hesitation. That intimacy made Estonia’s Strongest Man 2004 feel more like a test of strength played out right in front of the crowd than a conventional sporting competition.

The big question was simple: Tarmo Mitt or Andrus Murumets? Both men competed in international strongman leagues, and this contest on home soil offered a chance to settle who was stronger. Also competing were Peeter Aan, Meelis Pungits, Renat Kimmer, Jüri Rannaste, Roland Mändla, Urmas Saimre, Gert Gor¨anov and Lauri Nämi.
How did Estonia’s Strongest Man unfold, event by event?
The competition opened with a medley, which Murumets won convincingly. Held in a small, fenced-off area, the event was easy for spectators to follow, and the gap between competitors was immediately apparent.
The second event was the log lift. The log was actually a metal implement shaped like a log, weighing 110kg. Mitt went before Murumets and recorded 7 reps. Murumets needed 8 reps to win the event, and after two events he looked set for a comfortable overall victory. In all honesty, it was hard at that point to see whether Mitt could challenge him at all that day.
The top 10 progressed to the third event, from a starting field of 18 competitors. Holding cars on an incline gave Mitt his first event win and brought the contest back to life. Murumets responded with a win in the fourth event, the power stairs, taking his lead in event wins to 3:1.
The fifth event was the tire flip. Murumets could have all but secured overall victory here, but Mitt edged the win. Everything would now come down to the final event. A crucial rule applied: if competitors finished level on points, whoever won the final event would take the overall title.
The decisive moment: stone lifting
The final event was the concrete ball lift. Mitt was the clear favorite, as stone lifting was his specialty. He had already won this event at three international competitions that year.
Mitt went first and lifted all five stones with effortless ease. His time of 18.13 for 5 stones was close to world-class. Murumets responded with a powerful performance, matching Mitt’s blistering pace early on and at times moving even faster. A brief delay on the final and heaviest stone, weighing 173kg, proved decisive.
Everyone held their breath as they waited for the final result. The judges checked their stopwatches, and the verdict was clear: Tarmo Mitt had won the final event and taken the overall title for the fifth time. Murumets lost the final event by 0.18 sec. and finished second overall. Peeter Aan comfortably secured third.
