Alex-Edward Raus surpasses the raw squat world record
On Saturday, February 25, Tallinn hosted the first cup competition in classic powerlifting. Classic powerlifting differs from regular powerlifting in that no specialized equipment is used (knee wraps, bench shirts, and deadlift and squat suits). It is the first official cup competition of its kind, giving athletes a chance to show how much weight they can lift without equipment. Alex-Edward Raus was the big name of the day.
Alex-Edward Raus and the record attempt
Once again, 19-year-old Raus delivered incredible results, managing to surpass the squat world record! Weighing 102 kg, the young powerhouse squatted 312.5 kg, while the world record standard currently stands at 310 kg! Officially, though, the record will not be entered, as world records can only be set at international competitions. Raus also performed superbly in the other lifts – bench pressing 205 kg and deadlifting 312.5 kg. Every attempt by the young powerlifter is a new Estonian record!
Raigo Kuusnõmm also set a number of Estonian records, squatting 225 kg, bench pressing 175 and deadlifting 255 in the up to 83 kg weight class. In the -120kg class, rising star Argo Erit took the win with a 250 kilo squat, a 207.5 bench press and a 317.5 kg deadlift. Among the women, the best was 56 kg Marianna Bogdanova, who squatted 92.5 kg, bench pressed 47.5 and deadlifted 130 kg, a weight that many men could not beat either!
