The two-man bench press is getting more popular every year. You know what I’m talking about: one guy does a deadlift and yells, “it’s all yours, man,” while the other tries to sort of press the same bar up.
If you want to learn something or master it, try to master it by doing it, not by talking about it. People often ask what I think about this diet or that training program. Well, what am I supposed to think? How the hell would I know? Try it yourself and you’ll find out.
Listen twice as much as you act!
Only results count. It doesn’t matter at all what scientists, wise books or articles claim about any particular outcome. What counts is the result you reach yourself as a consequence of your own experiment.
People are paying more and more to make training and exercising easy and less demanding. Just look at the various ads (pointless training gadgets promising good results with little effort). The rise in popularity of various “emotional” group training sessions is further proof.
It is entirely possible to train for a whole year and have nothing change. Unfortunately, that is exactly the case for many trainees: they train for years with nothing changing and look the same the whole time.
Talk less and listen more. If you are a true learner and want to go far, you want to hear the teacher’s voice more than your own. When you do the talking, you don’t learn anything.
You can do more alone
Stop training with your female acquaintance or girlfriend. I tried it for a few weeks. Although I love my girlfriend very much… you know, when you train together, it is clearly impossible to achieve any notable results.
The technique in bodyweight exercises leaves a lot to be desired for very many people. You can meet countless guys who do a set of pull-ups with as much as 50 kg hanging from their body, yet if you ask them to do a single proper-form bodyweight pull-up, they can’t manage even that.
Lift more by lifting less
Stretch for at least half as much time as you train. If you train 4 hours a week, you should spend at least 2 hours stretching. This is important for preventing and avoiding injuries.
If you do three quad-dominant exercises for your legs, such as the leg press, leg extension and lunges, then for the sake of posture and pelvic balance, do three exercises for the posterior chain and hips as well… good mornings, leg curls and straight-leg deadlifts.
Balance it out
Unfortunately, most people still believe that low-intensity cardio training is the best way to burn fat. Fortunately, that thinking has recently started to change a little, thanks to the high-intensity circuit training programs developed by men such as Tom Venuto, Alwyn Cosgrove and Craig Ballantyne.
Practically any training program works, as long as the stimulus from the training load is sufficient and that stimulus is also supported with enough calories.
Intensify
If your training program includes the standard chest press, incline presses and decline presses, then to balance the shoulder joint, do the same number of different rowing movements as well.
