Estonian bench press championships

Estonian bench press championships 2004 in Saue: results, records, club standings and the results sheet, all in one place.

Estonian bench press championships

The Estonian championships brought nearly 100 bench press competitors to Saue on 2 October 2004. The day produced 21 new Estonian records, drew a packed crowd and offered a solid snapshot of the standard of powerlifting at the time.

This article brings together the key competition details, weight classes, overall standings and club results in a single, clearly presented results sheet. The broken gallery link has been removed, but the surviving links from the original article remain.

Estonian championships in Saue: why the day stood out

The competition in Saue was more than just another date on the calendar. Nearly 100 athletes took part, and 450-500 sports fans visited the venue over the course of the day. That was a record in itself for the sport. The competition was opened by the mayor of Saue, Mr. Ero Liivik, who pledged to continue working with the Estonian Powerlifting Federation.

There were four competition categories: youth, juniors, women and men. As is customary at powerlifting competitions, the men’s overall winner also had to undergo a doping test. The Estonian Powerlifting Federation promised to inform the press of the results in 2 weeks.

The organizers thanked the supporters who helped make the competition possible: Amazon.ee, Robocop, Realsport, Powerman, the town of Saue, Energy Club and PR Firmareklaam. Special thanks also went to the enthusiasts who did the work that spectators often never see.

According to the original announcement, photos from the event could be purchased from the online store by buying the event disc. Results and official results sheets were also available here at the time.

Estonian championships: the results

The bench press may look straightforward, but a results sheet quickly reveals how many details lie behind a performance. Body weight, age category, best attempt and Wilks points put each lift into a broader context. The figures and names have been preserved in the results below, as they are what give the competition its historical value.

How to read bench press results

The first line of the results usually lists the age category, placing and body weight. This is followed by the athlete’s name, date of birth, weigh-in weight and best attempt. A 0.0 in a row means that no successful lift was recorded. The simple truth is that in the bench press, moving the weight is not enough. The attempt must comply with the competition rules.

Wilks points allow athletes of different body weights to be compared. This means an athlete can place higher in the overall standings without lifting the heaviest weight if their result is stronger relative to their body weight. The club standings were calculated by adding together the team members’ points, which also rewarded strength across the team.

Estonian championships and practical takeaways

What can you learn from an old results sheet as someone training today? First, body weight and performance always go hand in hand in competition. Second, the work clubs do matters. When a club has several strong athletes, it shows in both the individual and team standings.

Third, that day in Saue shows how broad the bench press community already was in 2004. From the youth division to seniors, from women to men, from the lighter weight classes to the over 125.0 KG class. This was not an event built around one or two names, but a substantial cross-section of Estonian powerlifting.

Honestly, the value of results sheets like these has actually grown over time. They tell you more than placings and kilos lifted. They show who competed, which clubs were active and where the sport stood on one particular day in Saue.

FAQ

When were the XI Estonian bench press championships held?

The competition took place in Saue on 2 October 2004. The results sheet gives the same date in the format 02. October.2004.

How many Estonian records were set at the competition?

A total of 21 new Estonian records were set at the competition. Nearly 100 athletes took part, and 450-500 spectators attended over the course of the day.

Why are Wilks points listed separately on the results sheet?

Wilks points help compare the performances of athletes with different body weights. This makes it possible to determine whose lift was strongest relative to their body weight in the overall standings.
