The happy superwoman?!
What does our society’s superwoman look like?
The superwoman is successful at work, happily married and a mother. She has supportive friends and relatives, and she always finds time for them. Her home is tidy every day, the laundry is ironed, and dinner is on the table. The superwoman has the ideal figure, is sexy, wears stylish clothes, and is balanced, intelligent and sociable. The list could go on and on. And on top of all that, the superwoman still has enough time to wonder how happy she really is.
The modern woman should be the happiest woman of all time, because we have so many possibilities and choices: we can choose whom to marry, and whether to marry at all. Today, women can plan having children. We decide when, and whether, we want offspring. We have cosmetic surgery, psychologists, career counselors, stylists… So many possibilities and different choices. We try to become ever more perfect and to plan everything more precisely. Sometimes it seems that life gets complicated precisely in the tangle of all these possibilities and choices. The more options there are, the more superficial our decisions can become. The less we want to decide. And once a decision is made, the question arises: was it really the “right” one?
What happens when we don’t want to, or don’t know how to, make choices and compromises in any area, and try to be superwomen by meeting all the “norms”? It seems simply impossible, considering that a day still has only 24 hours, and although there are good time planners, no one has yet invented a way to add time to the day. At the expense of sleep? That is an option, but unfortunately the result is exhaustion.
So what can we do? Let’s try to be ideal with all our quirks – imperfectly perfect. By making choices every day and being realistic that we simply can’t do everything.
What really makes women happy?
A wellbeing survey of women conducted by Reebok in early 2012 found that most women take more joy in good health and in time spent with loved ones. The results showed that women find satisfaction in simple pleasures rather than in a lavish lifestyle: a clean house (65%), listening to music (58%) and receiving flowers (59%) were all considered more satisfying, while receiving expensive jewelry (39%) or going to parties (27%) was rated as less important.
We are all different, with our smaller and bigger dreams. What comes first for one woman is unimportant to another.
By worrying less about things that don’t really matter to us, and by taking more joy in the moments and the people who truly are important to us, we can be the superwomen of our own lives.
