IFBB fitness: rules and judging on stage

IFBB fitness is a precise discipline on stage: it’s not only about your shape, but also about knowing the rules, your outfit, your free routine and a calm performance. Here is a clear overview of what is expected of a competitor at measurement, in the bikini round, in the free routine and in the final.

Why do IFBB fitness rules matter?

At a fitness competition, a small slip can be costly. If a competitor doesn’t show up on time for measurement and registration, they may be disqualified from the competition. The same goes for outfits: the stage costume must meet the requirements before the competitor even reaches the stage.

Measurement and registration usually take place the day before the prejudging. All competitors, regardless of category, must go through this procedure. The head delegate or another designated representative must be present, because the organization is arranged by country and team.

  1. All competitors must go through measurement and registration.
  2. The competitor must have a valid passport with them.
  3. If necessary, the passport must carry a note confirming legal stay in a foreign country, for example a customs-stamp visa.
  4. The stage costume must be brought to registration.
  5. The music cassette must be in a plastic case, labeled with the competitor’s name, and rewound to the beginning of the correct track.

Yes, the technology has changed at today’s competitions, but the original idea remains the same: the music, documents and costume must be in order before the stage. Otherwise the judges and organizers cannot guarantee a fair and smooth competition.

IFBB fitness categories and registration

Women’s fitness has three height categories. They help compare competitors more fairly, because body proportions and stage presence depend a great deal on height.

  • Up to 160 cm
  • Up to 167 cm
  • Over 167 cm

The organizer announces the time for measurement and registration. Measuring and registering one category takes about half an hour. For this, the competition organizer must set aside a separate room with the necessary equipment, enough space, and chairs for both the judges and the delegates.

Each country’s head delegate gives the organizer a cassette in a plastic case with that country’s national anthem, along with the country’s national flag. It sounds like a small detail, but on stage, ritual and precision play a big role.

How is IFBB fitness judged on stage?

A simple truth: fitness is not bodybuilding. A bodybuilder’s physique is not accepted at this kind of competition, because the discipline judges the overall package. The judge looks at shape, posture, outfit, confidence and how freely the competitor moves on stage.

In the bikini round, competitors are brought onto the stage in numerical order. Everyone performs the four quarter turns together. Then the competitors are split into groups of no more than 5, and the four quarter turns are performed again.

A relaxed pose doesn’t mean standing any old way. The competitor stands straight, with head and eyes forward, shoulders back, chest out, stomach in, feet together and arms loose at the sides. Rigidly held poses must not be used.

The judge assesses the competitor from head to toe. They look at muscle shape, harmony, proportion, grace and body fat percentage. At the same time, they watch that the competitor is neither too muscular nor too slight.

Free routine

The free routine lasts 2 minutes. Here only the routine is judged, not the competitor’s physique. The routine must be fast, clear and well choreographed. The judges look primarily for two types of elements.

  1. Strength elements
  2. Flexibility elements

Tempo is judged as well. If the routine drags or loses its rhythm, it shows on stage immediately. A good free routine is not just a string of difficult tricks, but a coherent whole from start to finish.

Outfit, bikinis and stage behavior

The posing outfit is part of the judging. Competitors wear two-piece bikinis and high-heeled shoes. Style, material and color are up to the competitor, but the choice must stay within the rules.

  1. Head delegates must make sure that competitors know the IFBB rules.
  2. Thongs are strictly prohibited in the bikini round.
  3. The bikini bottoms must cover at least half of the glutes at all times.
  4. The bikini bottoms must not slip between the buttocks like a thong.
  5. Bikinis are checked backstage.
  6. If the bikini doesn’t meet the requirements, the competitor is given 5 minutes to fix the problem.
  7. If the problem isn’t resolved within 5 minutes, the competitor is eliminated from the list.
  8. Thongs must not be worn over or under another outfit either.
  9. If a competitor on stage removes the clothing covering a thong, the music stops and the competitor is disqualified immediately.
  10. Using sparkly elements on the body is prohibited.

While on stage, competitors may not chew gum or eat candy. Wearing jewelry is allowed. For safety reasons, using posing oil is strictly prohibited. During the free routine, competitors may be barefoot or wear athletic shoes.

During the free routine, competitors may wear sponsor logos on their outfits up to 4×8 cm in size. Any questions about the bikini must be raised with the organizers at measurement or registration, not right before going on stage.

IFBB fitness in the final

The final brings 6 finalists on stage. They walk out in numerical order, wearing bikinis and high-heeled shoes, and perform four quarter turns at the same time. Judging follows the same principles as in the bikini round.

After the comparisons, the finalists change into the same outfits they wore for the free routine. They then perform their free routine to music of their own choice, lasting no more than 2 minutes. This part of the competition is no longer judged.

FAQ

Is IFBB fitness the same as bodybuilding?

No. IFBB fitness judges the physique, posture, stage confidence and the free routine as a whole. A physique that is too bodybuilding-like can work against a competitor in this division.

How long is the free routine?

The free routine is 2 minutes long. In the final, the free routine can also last up to 2 minutes, but the final routine performed after the comparisons is not judged.

What is checked at registration?

Documents, category, music and stage outfit are checked. Compliance with the bikini requirements is important, because a violation can lead to disqualification from the competition.
