Maris Kajari on training, motherhood and energy

Maris Kajari talks about working as a trainer, motherhood, staying fit and why being active should start with feeling good.

Maris Kajari on training, motherhood and energy

Maris Kajari is a trainer at Sparta Sports Club whose conversation brings together family life, the joy of movement and a thoroughly practical outlook. She teaches Zumba, Pump Fx and Spinning classes and puts it plainly: when you do something with passion and enjoyment, getting in shape comes more easily too.

How Maris Kajari became a trainer

Maris Kajari became a trainer when her first daughter, Keira, was still little. She started working at Sparta Sports Club when Keira was 8 months old. Before that, she had worked as an account manager at SEB Bank, but during a training course, she was asked to write down her dreams. She wrote that she would like to be a trainer as a hobby someday.

It sounds like a simple statement, but sometimes that is exactly how things begin. Maris says there are no impossible dreams, only our own limited ideas about what is possible. She has been working as a trainer for 3 years.

Maris has a university degree in law. She also studied piano at music school for 7 years. She became neither a lawyer nor a musician, but every week in her work as a trainer, she draws on the sense of rhythm and the ear for music she developed at music school. After all, so much of group training depends on how movement, pace and music come together.

As a trainer, she has completed courses in Fx concepts, Zumba and indoor cycling, also known as Spinning. She has also attended various workshops and conventions. It is a good illustration of how being a trainer involves more than teaching classes. Learning is a constant part of the job.

Why family and exercise go hand in hand for Maris Kajari

Maris says being a trainer is more of a hobby for her, because her main job is being a mother to her three daughters. That does not mean exercise takes a back seat. Instead, family life has given her more strength, a better sense of time and the ability to organize her days more wisely.

As she puts it, the children are the sunshine in their family and the strength that keeps them going. Thanks to them, she has achieved more than she could ever have imagined. Having children has not stopped her from doing anything that matters to her. It is a thought that many new mothers will recognize: when every minute counts, time becomes much more valuable.

When her middle child was 3 months old, Maris attended a Zumba training course. Later, she took her youngest along for a day of Spinning instructor training in Finland. Her view is simple: children come into your life and get used to the family’s pace. Support at home matters too. Maris gives credit to her husband, who supports her and enjoys spending time with the children.

Her children, she says, have been her best teachers. Once you have been a mother, far fewer things seem impossible. That is not a slogan but a reflection of everyday experience: tiredness, plans, workouts, meals, the home and, through it all, the desire to do something for yourself.

How to stay in shape without putting too much pressure on yourself

Maris half-jokingly tells new and expectant mothers that we are always in shape, because round is a shape too. But there is a serious thought behind the joke: a healthy body makes for a fresher mind. If you are physically active before and after pregnancy, you will feel better and find it easier to regain your pre-pregnancy fitness.

So what really matters? It is not just body weight. Maris rightly asks whether the problem sometimes lies in focusing on the number on the scale while forgetting how we feel and other things that matter. For her, our main purpose in life is to be happy: to laugh and love more, and think and complain less.

You should exercise in good spirits and when you want to. Gritting your teeth and chasing a goal does not always leave you feeling good or produce lasting results. If your goal is to be in good shape, you have to work toward it, but that work does not have to be a punishment. The simple truth is that the habit most likely to last is one you can actually tolerate and eventually even enjoy.

Being a trainer, nutrition and everyday energy

In Maris’s view, an ideal trainer knows what they are doing and why. They help clients work toward their goals, offering encouragement, motivation and guidance. With today’s busy pace of life, an ideal trainer might even turn up at your door with a barbell if you have not made it to a workout in a while. On that point, Maris admits she still has room for improvement.

She gets her energy from her family and her clients. One complements and supports the other. She has driven to a class feeling completely drained, only to come away afterward with enough strength to move mountains. That is one of the great joys of group training: you arrive in one mood and leave in a completely different one.

Rest, for her, means more than just peace and quiet. She relaxes by spending time with her family, working out and traveling. She also enjoys typically feminine ways to unwind, such as shopping. In her view, the ideal balance in life is being able to find rest as you go about your everyday life.

Maris is just as straightforward about nutrition: she does keep an eye on a few things, even if it is just making sure the children do not go hungry. She tries to keep the family’s diet balanced. She tends to eat chocolate and cake earlier in the day, and eggs and cheese later on. It sounds less like a strict meal plan and more like real life.

For her, someone in ideal shape has a balanced life, is happy and feels comfortable in their own body. If you’re just starting to exercise for health, she recommends finding an activity you truly love. Do it with passion and enjoyment. A good mood and good fitness will then come much more naturally.
