Meet Estonia’s experts: physiotherapist Georg Laasik
Georg Laasik (a practicing physiotherapist since 2013) talks about how he got into physiotherapy, how he trains and what he recommends for people just getting started with exercise.
Georg Laasik: how long have you been practicing different forms of therapy, what sparked your interest and why did you choose this field?
Georg: I’ve been practicing different forms of therapy since year II of my physiotherapy studies. My interest began
for a very personal reason: I was struggling with neck and upper back problems caused by a sedentary job.
Looking back, one of the first things that planted the idea of studying this subject may have been a doctor’s remark: “You already know so much about this that you could do it yourself.” While looking for a solution to my problem, I also came into contact with physiotherapists. That was when I saw the potential of this field.
What sports do you do yourself?
G: Mostly strength training: outdoor bodyweight training when the weather’s nice, and otherwise good old-fashioned
weightlifting. Beyond that, I do just enough to get around (my mode of transport is a bicycle, which I ride for almost an hour a day) and support my strength training. For cardio at the gym, I prefer rowing and
the elliptical trainer.
What is your goal as a therapist, and where do you see yourself in 5 years?
G: My goal as a therapist is to be the best I can be, which means continually developing. In 5 years, I still see myself working as a physiotherapist, though I may have a few letters after my name… Maybe I’ll be pursuing an interesting degree somewhere.
What good and bad experiences have you had as a therapist?
G: Every piece of positive feedback and every visible result is a good experience. I haven’t really had many bad experiences,
because I work as safely as possible. Some people occasionally have slightly stiff muscles for a few days afterward, but so far everyone’s arms and legs still work (and generally better :D).
What do you recommend for people who have just started exercising?
G: 1) Be sensible, set realistic goals, educate yourself or seek professional help.
2) Prevention is cheaper than treatment.
3) Take care of your body!
