EC stack: ephedrine and caffeine for fat burning
The ephedrine and caffeine stack, or EC stack, is probably one of the most effective fat burners you can use to speed up your metabolism. Research has shown three things at once: a faster metabolism, less hunger and better muscle retention while dieting. In this article I look at how the ephedrine-caffeine stack actually works and what you can use to boost it.
Why the EC stack works
Ephedrine and caffeine are a classic stimulant pair. Ephedrine raises sympathetic nervous system activity, while caffeine blocks adenosine receptors and prolongs the effect of ephedrine. Together, the combination produces a thermogenic effect — the body starts producing more heat and burns a few percent more energy at rest.
What’s interesting is that the ephedrine-caffeine stack’s effect on fat burning persists even after the body has gotten used to it. The initial stimulant effect — that alertness and “let’s go” feeling — fades within a couple of weeks. But the metabolic side, the part that helps reduce belly fat, keeps working with longer use. That is exactly why the ephedrine and caffeine stack is a consistent choice as a diet supplement, not a one- or two-day kick.
Appetite suppression is the other side, and it is often underestimated. In a calorie deficit, keeping hunger quiet is half the battle. The ephedrine-caffeine stack takes the edge off precisely the nagging between-meal snacking that hits hardest in the fourth week of a diet.
How to dose EC
The classic dose is 20 mg of ephedrine and 200 mg of caffeine per dose. You can take it two to three times a day — in the morning, at lunch and, if needed, before training. It’s best not to take it after four or five in the evening, since insomnia is the most common side effect.
Side effects to keep in mind: raised blood pressure, a faster heart rate and the insomnia already mentioned. If you have heart or blood pressure problems, the ephedrine and caffeine stack is not for you. The same goes for an overactive thyroid gland. An average adult, however, tolerates a 20/200 dose without problems.
If you can’t get pure ephedrine, herbal equivalents work too — mainly Ma Huang plant extract. The effect is similar, but the concentration is less precise, so start with half the usual dose and feel your way.
L-tyrosine and green tea — EC boosters
L-tyrosine
L-tyrosine is an amino acid from which the body synthesizes dopamine and noradrenaline — the same signaling molecules the ephedrine-caffeine stack stimulates. Adding 500–1000 mg of L-tyrosine to each dose of the ephedrine and caffeine stack noticeably strengthens the effect of the original mix. People who have used the ephedrine-caffeine stack for a longer time and then added L-tyrosine describe one and the same thing: hunger drops even further, and the original alert feeling, which tends to fade with long-term use, comes back.
In practice: take L-tyrosine on an empty stomach, 20–30 minutes before the EC dose. With food it is absorbed less well, because it competes with other amino acids.
Green tea
Green tea has been used for weight loss in the East for centuries. In the EC context it doesn’t so much raise the peak of the effect as extend its duration. The catechins in green tea slow caffeine metabolism and support fatty acid mobilization.
In addition, green tea helps smooth out one typical EC problem: many people experience strong weakness and drowsiness once the dose wears off in the first few times. Green tea eases that crash by keeping your energy level steadier.
I recommend 2–3 cups a day, spread between the EC doses. Tea bags do the job just as well as loose-leaf tea if you don’t have time to brew.
Practical tips for EC users
EC is not a miracle cure that does the diet for you. It amplifies the calorie deficit and training volume you already have — above all, it helps push through those last 2–3 kilos that would otherwise stay put. Without a proper nutrition plan and strength training, nothing miraculous will happen.
Run a proper cycle: 6–8 weeks on, then 2–4 weeks off. Continuous use without a break wears out the adrenal glands and makes the effect of the next cycle weaker. During the break you will feel more tired — that’s normal and passes.
If you combine EC, L-tyrosine and green tea with a straightforward diet and training plan, fat loss shouldn’t be an insurmountable challenge. But the emphasis is on the word “together” — EC alone won’t work wonders.
EC FAQ
Is EC legal in Estonia?
Pure ephedrine is a prescription medicine in Estonia and is not sold over the counter. Herbal equivalents (Ma Huang, sida cordifolia) are in a gray area — they are sold as dietary supplements, but quality and concentration vary a lot. Always check the manufacturer’s origin.
How quickly can you feel the effect of EC?
The stimulant effect — alertness, a slightly faster heartbeat — arrives 30–45 minutes after the dose. The fat-burning part is slower and only becomes visible after a couple of weeks, in the form of a change in weight and waist circumference.
Can you combine EC with a pre-workout?
I don’t recommend it. Most pre-workout mixes already contain caffeine, often 200–300 mg in a single scoop. By doubling your caffeine intake you risk heart rhythm disturbances and severe insomnia. Use either EC as a workout booster or a pre-workout, not both at once.
