Upper chest workout: the best exercises

Training the upper chest is one of the most effective ways to make your physique look noticeably bigger — even under a V-neck sweater. Below you’ll find the exercises that actually target the upper chest muscles, not just the lower chest.

Why is upper chest training so important?

Most lifters press on a flat bench and build a strong but flat chest. The problem: flat pressing mainly works the middle and lower chest. The result is a chest that looks impressive on the bench but, in everyday life — under a sweater or T-shirt — stays rather one-dimensional.

The upper chest — the clavicular head of the pectoralis major — develops well from exercises done on an incline bench. This is the area that creates the so-called “chest shelf” that anyone looking at you from the front or the side will notice.

A simple truth: if your upper chest muscles stay weak, your whole physique looks somehow unfinished.

Upper chest workout: two core exercises

Let’s start with two exercises recommended by the original Muscle & Fitness article — and there is real logic behind them.

Low-to-high cable crossover between two pulleys

From an upper chest perspective, this is one of the smartest exercises you can do with cables. The handles are in the low position and the movement guides your hands up and inward — exactly where the upper chest muscles work best.

How to do it:

  • Stand between two cable machines with the handles in the low position.
  • Lean slightly forward, back straight.
  • Bring your hands up and together — as if hugging someone who is standing taller than you.
  • Do 8–12 repetitions per set, with light to moderate weight.

A full range of motion is the key here. Don’t let the weight dictate a half-range movement — light weight and clean technique are better than heavy weight and a short pull.

High-to-low cable crossover between two pulleys

This variation — handles high, movement downward — works the middle and lower chest more. It’s a good exercise for finishing a workout and “burning out” the chest muscles, but for developing the upper chest the low-to-high variation is clearly more effective.

Both variations fit well at the end of a workout, after heavier press exercises.

Upper chest workout on an incline bench — the main exercises

Cables are great, but the upper chest muscles gain the most mass from presses done on an incline bench. An incline angle of 30–45 degrees is optimal — anything steeper than 45° shifts too much of the load onto the shoulders.

  • Incline barbell press — the classic. Heavy, easy to progress, works well.
  • Incline dumbbell press — a greater range of motion, and your shoulders get more freedom.
  • Incline fly — adds isolation and fits well at the end of a workout.

Honestly: if you currently only do chest presses on a flat bench, switching to an incline bench will change your results faster than any extra exercise.

FAQ — frequently asked questions about upper chest training

How often should you train the upper chest?
2–3 times per week is enough. Muscles need time to recover — training every day doesn’t speed up results, it more likely slows them down.

Are the upper and lower chest separate muscles?
No — the pectoralis major is one muscle, but its upper (clavicular) and lower (sternal) portions are activated to different degrees by different exercises. Incline exercises emphasize the upper portion, while flat and decline angles emphasize the lower.

How many repetitions should you do to build the upper chest muscles?
8–12 repetitions per set is the classic hypertrophy range. Some lifters also use heavier weight with 4–6 repetitions — both work as long as progression is systematic.
