Markus Männik and Võru Strongman 2012
Markus Männik won Võru Strongman 2012, held in Võru on August 20, where seven strongmen tested themselves across five events. The day began with rain threatening and doubts lingering, but by the time the competition started, the weather was good and the crowd was cheering loudly.
Markus Männik and the build-up to competition day
On August 20, the anniversary of the restoration of Estonia’s independence, seven strongmen from Estonia and Latvia headed to Võru. The Võru Strongman 2012 title would not come easily. With two competitors from Latvia and five from Estonia, the day had an international flavor from the outset.
At first, the weather did not look promising. That matters a great deal at outdoor competitions like this, where wet ground, cold winds and slippery equipment can completely change the nature of an event. By the start of the competition, however, the weather had improved. That gave both the athletes and the crowd a boost.
The spectators did more than stand quietly beside the course. They cheered, shouted encouragement and brought the atmosphere to life. That matters in strongman, because after the third or fourth event, every extra second and every step starts to take its toll.
How did Võru Strongman 2012 unfold?
The competition featured five events. From the sidelines, some may initially have looked surprisingly easy. Some competitors wondered why the events were so light. But strongman takes its toll gradually. As the competition goes on, even what looks easy on paper gets harder.
The first event was a 46m farmer’s walk with 125kg implements. It was a close contest from the start, with three men recording exactly the same time to the hundredth of a second: Markus, Rolands Gulbis and Gunnar Gimbutas. It was exactly the opening the crowd had hoped for: nobody could pull comfortably ahead.
The second event introduced a 115 kg log and a 66 kg dumbbell, which the competitors lifted overhead in alternation. Marko Remlik was the fastest here, completing a total of 10 repetitions with each implement. He finished 2 repetitions ahead of runner-up Markus Männik. It was a clear sign that one strong event alone would not be enough to secure the overall win.
The third event was the tire flip, 10x. Marko Remlik won this event too. This time, the margin was telling: he beat runner-up Markus Männik by a full 11 seconds. The tire flip clearly shows who can combine strength, explosive power and rhythm. One poor push can ruin an entire attempt.
Markus Männik in the decisive events
The fourth event was a 355 kg yoke carry. The starting order was based on the results of the previous event, with the winner going last. That adds pressure: starting later means you know everyone else’s times, but the whole crowd is also waiting for your attempt.
So what happened? With each successive athlete, the yoke moved faster. This was the event in which Markus, the Võru Strongman, took the win. After losing seconds in the earlier events, it was an important turnaround, as the overall standings in strongman often shift only toward the end.
The fifth event was a duck walk with a 200 kg weight. The strongman won this one too, securing the overall victory that had become a must-achieve goal by the end of the day. Winning the final two events so convincingly is no accident. It takes strength, nerve and the ability to manage your energy.

What can a strongman competition teach you?
Võru Strongman 2012 demonstrated a simple truth: an event’s difficulty is not measured in kilograms alone. The 125kg farmer’s walk implements, 355 kg yoke and 200 kg duck walk involve big numbers, but technique, grip, pace and recovery between events also matter as the competition unfolds.
In strongman, one event can give you a substantial advantage, but winning overall requires consistency. Marko Remlik won the second and third events convincingly; Markus Männik responded in the fourth and fifth. It is precisely this kind of battle that makes a competition exciting to watch.
The organizers wanted to hold the competition again the following year, 2013, and hoped for a large turnout. When the crowd turns up, the athletes give their all to the finish and the winner only emerges in the final events, there is every reason for a competition like this to return.
