Proper breathing and rest between sets in the gym

When you train in the gym, technique matters not only in how you perform the exercises, but also in how you breathe and rest. Proper breathing and enough rest make your training more effective, help prevent injuries and speed up recovery. Here is a thorough overview of why and how you should breathe and rest, both during repetitions and between them.

1. Proper breathing during training

Breathing is directly linked to how effectively you perform your training. Proper breathing technique ensures that your muscles get enough oxygen, improves performance and reduces the strain on your heart and circulatory system.

a) Breathing out during the effort

One of the most important rules in strength training is to breathe out during the hardest part of the exercise, known as the concentric phase. For example, when you squat, you breathe in as you lower down and breathe out as you rise back up. The same applies to the bench press: you breathe in as you lower the bar and breathe out as you press it up.

Why? Breathing out relieves pressure in the chest and reduces the load on the heart. It helps stabilize the body and keeps blood pressure steadier.

b) Breathing in while the muscles stretch

You usually breathe in during the stretching, or eccentric, phase of the muscle. When you lower into a squat, your thigh muscles stretch, and that is the moment you breathe in. This lets your lungs fill with as much air as possible, giving your muscles the oxygen they need for the next effort.

2. Avoiding breathing mistakes

Many beginners tend to make mistakes that can have unwanted consequences:

  • Holding your breath: If you hold your breath during a deadlift or squat, it can raise your blood pressure, which may lead to dizziness or even fainting.
  • Rushed breathing: Breathing too fast can cause hyperventilation, which makes the body lose carbon dioxide and leads to lightheadedness.

3. Rest between sets and repetitions

Recovery, or rest, between sets and repetitions also plays an important role during training. It helps your muscles recover and prepare for the next effort while maintaining training intensity.

a) Length of rest

How long you should rest depends on your training goals:

  • Strength training: If your goal is to increase maximal strength, rest 2–5 minutes between sets, because heavier weights need a longer recovery time.
  • Muscle building: For hypertrophy, or muscle building, the ideal rest time is 30–90 seconds. This keeps the muscles under tension and improves the growth response.
  • Improving endurance: If the focus is on muscle endurance, a 30-second rest between sets is enough.

b) Active rest

Sometimes you can use active rest between sets to keep your body warm and improve recovery. Light movement, stretching or breathing exercises all work well for this. Active rest may also help clear lactic acid from the muscles faster, which reduces fatigue.

4. Syncing breathing and rest

During training, it is important to keep your breathing and rest in sync. Once you have finished an exercise, focus on deep, calm breathing while you rest. This helps normalize your heart rate and improves oxygen transport to the muscles.

  • Deep breathing: After an intense set, breathe slowly and deeply to help your body recover from the oxygen deficit.
  • Controlling your breathing: While resting, keep an eye on your breathing and don’t let it become shallow.

Summary

Proper breathing technique and enough rest are just as important as performing the exercises correctly. Breathing out during the effort, breathing in during the stretch and resting deliberately between sets make sure your training is effective, safe and optimized for better results. It is important to listen to your body, not to rush, and to follow the basics of breathing and rest. This helps you get the most out of the time you spend in the gym and reach your goals faster and more safely.
