Fit Model 2016: an interview with Aleksandra Laer

Fit Model 2016 overall champion Aleksandra Laer talks about the new category, training and why a feminine shape beats big muscle mass.

Fit Model is a new IFBB competition category that combines athletic shape, glamour and stage show. The title of overall champion in the first season, 2016, went to Aleksandra Laer — a former bikini fitness competitor, personal trainer and dancer. We talked about what is different in this discipline and how Aleksandra stays in shape without a harsh diet.

What is the Fit Model category?

Fit Model is a sport created by the IFBB, and 2016 was only its first season. Judges assess overall muscle tone, an athletic look and level of conditioning. Much less emphasis is placed on muscle size and leanness than in bikini fitness, for example. For women, judges look first and foremost at proportions and natural, feminine beauty.

According to Aleksandra, it is precisely the balance that makes the category attractive: “Big muscles and excessive leanness aren’t required. Everything that’s needed is achievable with moderate training and balanced nutrition. I really hope it stays that way.”

Aleksandra’s road to Fit Model

Aleksandra has a long athletic background. At school, they did athletics, sports gymnastics and rhythmic gymnastics, and later dance at a professional level. They started in bikini fitness in 2012 and quickly reached the top:

  • 2014 — Estonian Championships, Bikini Fitness, 2nd place
  • 2015 — Estonian Cup, Bikini Fitness, 2nd place
  • 2015 — Olympia Amateur, 10th place
  • 2016 — Estonian Cup, Fit Model overall category winner

The move to Fit Model felt natural. “When the category was introduced, I immediately thought it suited me — it doesn’t require a lot of muscle mass and lets me stay within a natural, feminine aesthetic,” Aleksandra says. Former competitors and coaches recommended the same. “I’m very grateful to them for their support.”

Training and nutrition

When it comes to nutrition, Aleksandra is sensible rather than extreme. “I eat healthy, sometimes even boringly. I don’t restrict myself with an excessive diet.” Aleksandra works as a personal trainer and teaches clients to eat healthily, so the aim is to follow the same advice that is given to others.

Aleksandra eats five times a day — this suits their body type. Calories are counted, but the plan isn’t rigid. “Sometimes I reward myself with a glass of wine or a sweet treat,” Aleksandra admits honestly.

As for supplements, Aleksandra takes Omega 3-6-9, magnesium, vitamin C, BCAA and amino acids all the time. During the competition period, multivitamins and glutamine are added.

According to Aleksandra, their greatest strength and greatest weakness are one and the same: hard work. “I can work myself to death. Since my job is physical, sometimes I don’t have the strength left to train myself.” Motivation comes from clients — from the wish to be a good role model for them — and energy from loved ones. Aleksandra relaxes by reading, going to the cinema and staying at home.

Advice for anyone starting out in Fit Model

“Believe in yourself, no matter what others think of your dreams. There is always someone who will give good advice and support you. Find that person and take action.” Aleksandra’s motto is simple: Do it for yourself. Only you can define your limits.

FAQ

How does Fit Model differ from bikini fitness?

Fit Model puts more weight on overall tone, proportions and stage presentation — hairstyle, evening gown, movement. Muscle volume and level of leanness are secondary, which makes preparation less extreme.

Do you have to follow a strict diet when preparing for Fit Model?

Not in Aleksandra’s experience. Moderate training and balanced nutrition get you to the goal without prolonged starvation. Consistency matters, not short-term restriction.

Where do I start if the category interests me?

Find a coach who knows the Fit Model requirements and start building your shape systematically at least half a year before the competition. Stage performance — walking, posing — needs separate practice.
