Kati Grabbi and bodyfitness: an honest journey
Kati Grabbi is a bodyfitness competitor who found the sport through role models seen on TV. This story is about how one interest turned into training, competition shape and daily discipline.
Why Kati Grabbi chose bodyfitness
Kati took up bodyfitness at a time when the sport wasn’t yet familiar to everyone. In November it will be two years since Kati started training. The first push came from a very simple moment: Kati saw Laura (Rosin) Reisalu and Liisa Otsus on TV.
That sparked a thought: wow, what amazing physiques, I’d like one like that too. Kati started looking into what they do, found a coach and got going. Kati’s coach is Risto Ojapõld.
It’s a good example of how a sport can seem distant at first but becomes very concrete once a person finds a role model and takes the first step. Bodyfitness isn’t only about a good-looking stage physique. It means training, nutrition, routine and the ability to pull yourself together even when you’d rather do something easier.
How Kati Grabbi trains and eats
Kati’s biggest athletic achievement was first place and the overall win at this year’s Estonian Cup. Kati also counts second place at BaltiMatš as a very good result. Kati talks about goals cautiously: the aim is to go higher, but not every plan is being shared yet.
Is it a job or a hobby? Kati’s answer is honest: both, but more of a job. Outside the sport, horseback riding has been a hobby, although Kati hasn’t been able to devote time to it for the past year. Kati works at Keila Health Center.
Motivation comes from the mirror and from results. When your shape improves, it gives you more drive. At the same time, good shape doesn’t come about by chance. According to Kati, the beginning was hard because Kati was a big junk food lover. Now eating at set times has become a way of life. Kati tries to eat a varied diet, because the same food over and over gets tiresome.
When it comes to supplements, the picture is simple. Right now Kati doesn’t take many. Kati has used protein and a mass gainer, nothing else.
What bodyfitness demands in everyday life
Support from loved ones counts for a lot. Kati’s brother and sister cheer Kati on. The brother trains at the gym too, although according to Kati he doesn’t want to go on stage. Kati’s parents are supportive as well. Kati’s partner only said: just make sure you don’t go too far.
One funny thing is that many people don’t know what bodyfitness is at all. When Kati says bodyfitness is the sport, people have asked whether it’s like being an aerobics queen. Sometimes Kati then says it’s bodybuilding and explains: bodyfitness is a milder version of bodybuilding.
Adapting your nutrition is a topic of its own at home. Kati prepares their own food. Kati’s partner eats whatever they like, and it’s hard to hold back with that going on. Kati sums it up simply: a strong character. Once a week, though, Kati still allows a treat or two. For birthdays and family dinners Kati brings their own food, because that’s the easiest way.
Kati doesn’t see many bad habits in themself. Kati doesn’t drink alcohol at all. Kati used to be a big sweets fan, and eating a whole bar of chocolate was no problem. Now Kati doesn’t even miss it.
Kati Grabbi’s role models and background
As a child, Kati wanted to become a police officer until the end of basic school. Kati has always liked tough disciplines. Plans changed, but the character trait stayed: Kati suits effort that puts you to the test.
From school PE class, Kati especially remembers long-distance running. Kati hated it. Kati was a fast runner, but the teacher made Kati run long distances. There was no stamina, and every time at the finish there was a taste of blood in the mouth. Later Kati took up sprinting, and it turned out to be quite a strong discipline.
As a role model for an ideal physique, Kati names Natalia Nazarenko-Kiivikas. The choice feels close to Kati’s heart because Natalia Nazarenko-Kiivikas has helped Kati a lot and been nearby. The photo shoot left Kati with a good feeling and new experiences. Before that there had been two sessions; the first was the hardest, but this time everything already felt pretty okay.
