Trainer of the week – Ethel Otsason

Meet trainer Ethel Otsason and discover her sporting background, her work at ArcticSport and her passion for creative, dynamic workouts.

My sporting background has been very varied.
When I was a little girl, my mother tried to get me into gymnastics, but without success: I only lasted a few sessions. My father then took me to badminton training, which I stuck with for several years, with varying degrees of enthusiasm.

After badminton came football, again at my father’s instigation!

The other players were too aggressive for my liking, so I decided to give it up.

I started ninth grade at Otepää Sports School, specializing in alpine skiing, but missing my parents and hometown soon brought me back to Tartu! My love of alpine skiing continues to this day.

I have studied at Tartu Tamme Gymnasium, Tartu Forselius Gymnasium and the University of Tartu’s Faculty of Physical Education. Last year, I began studying Exercise and Sport at Audentes University.

I took up aerobics at the Livoonia sports club when I was 14. I went to classes there practically every day. Completely hooked on movement and dance, I soon realized where I wanted to channel my energy in the future! By the end of ninth grade, I knew for certain that my future lay in working as a trainer, and enrolling in the Faculty of Physical Education felt like the first right step along that path!

During my third year at university, my personal life brought me to Tallinn, where I was very fortunate to start working as a trainer at Forum Sport straight away. Fellow trainers Kristel Tamm and Riina Suhotskaja helped me settle in and supported me through a fairly difficult first year.

After ForumSport, I worked at the following clubs:

Keila Health Center, SalongStuudio99, RevalSport, ArcticSport.

ArcticSport remains my home club to this day.

I started at ArcticSport as a group fitness instructor /aerobics, aqua aerobics, spinning/ 3 years ago, then became a support instructor. In March 2007, I took on the role of group fitness coordinator.

We currently have over thirty active trainers at our club, with 151 group fitness classes taking place each week.

I am very happy with the team of trainers at Arctic and delighted to work with such lovely, creative people!

I hold the following qualification and have completed the following courses:

Category 3 professional qualification issued by the Estonian Olympic Committee and the Estonian Qualifications Authority,

EFTE basic gym course,

Bosu Balance Training System course,

FAF aerobics,

Group indoor rowing course (Finland),

EFTE spinning,

EEVL aqua aerobics courses,

Estonian Gymnastics Federation aerobics instructor courses.

I have also attended fitness forums and workshops in London and Moscow.

As a trainer, I value freedom above all else – there is no one truth to live by!!! I value trainers who have a thorough understanding of human anatomy and physiology, who teach creatively and can inspire a love of movement even in people with no interest in sport!

I take a slightly wry view of trainers who push their opinions and views too hard…

I love dynamic workouts with plenty of movement, and expressing myself through dance.

As a trainer, I have never tried to please everyone. I have a clear vision of how to run my workouts and I believe in it, but at the same time, I need opportunities to grow and new challenges.

My role models, my favorite menJ: David Van de Velde, Balazs Fuzessy, Steve Boedt.
