Kregor Hermet is a player on Estonia’s men’s national basketball team — 205 cm tall, 109 kg, two workouts a day. In this interview, Kregor Hermet describes how a typical day goes, what is on the menu and which supplements are used.
Kregor Hermet — background and the road to basketball
In first grade, our school was flooded with invitations to try out different sports. Both of my parents were athletes, so I definitely wanted to do something — the only question was what.
At that age there were so many options that I couldn’t decide. So I picked blindly and ended up with basketball. Audentes, and that’s where I stayed.
My biggest achievement so far: representing Estonia’s men’s national basketball team. I haven’t done any other sport seriously, but I like sport in general — I follow a lot of it and also enjoy playing volleyball and football. Variety is important.
Kregor Hermet — a day with two workouts
A typical day starts at 10:30 with a strength training session that lasts about 45 minutes. From there I go straight to the court for basketball practice. The morning block adds up to about 2 hours.
On different days we focus on different muscle groups in the gym. It’s either general strength training or work on the explosive side — it all depends on the weekly plan and on what’s coming up next in the national team or club schedule.
The evening session usually starts at 18:30. This is team basketball practice, where we focus more on tactics and game-like elements. The session is intense and also lasts about 2 hours.
Between the two sessions, it’s important for the body to recover. For that I also go to the spa — the sauna and water help me handle the heavy training load better.
Kregor Hermet’s diet and supplements
The principle is simple. The days are tough, and two sessions back to back mean the food has to provide enough energy for training and enough protein for the muscles to recover afterwards. And the stomach always has to be full.
My favorite cuisine is Italian, and especially different kinds of pasta. Carbohydrates before a long training day are not the enemy — on the contrary, without them I don’t have the energy.
As supplements, I use vitamins C and B, as well as multivitamins. I also take omega-3 oil. After strength training I drink a protein shake or a protein-containing recovery drink — it simply helps so much that I wouldn’t want to skip it.
Motivation, role models and recovery
What motivates me most is the will to be better — the best version of myself that I can be. To squeeze everything out of myself, and of course also the results and the desire to succeed at what I do.
I can’t name one specific role model. Rather, I follow the world’s top players in my sport in general and try to learn something from them — small things worth keeping in mind.
I relax by sleeping — I like sleeping quite a lot. I’m also a big fan of series and films, so on a rest day there’s often a longer evening of watching a show.
Three tips for getting into better shape
- Consistency matters most. One hard workout changes nothing — consistent work changes everything.
- Rest is a very important part of training. Without rest, the body doesn’t recover and you don’t progress.
- Training without proper nutrition doesn’t work even half as well — the two have to go hand in hand.
