Valentina Zabiyaka’s bodyfitness workout
Valentina Zabiyaka shows what bodyfitness training looks like when the goal is both a strong back and a stage-ready physique. Here is her pre-contest back workout, her tips on presentation and her training cycle, as we saw them in the gym.
What makes Valentina Zabiyaka’s training worth a closer look?
A multiple Russian bodyfitness champion who has placed 4th at the European Championships, Valentina Zabiyaka takes a deliberate approach to training. Known simply as Valja in the gym, she was already preparing for her next competitions when we had the chance to watch her train up close during the Euro Elite Champions Cup in Võsu.
The first surprise came before the workout. There was no heading straight for the barbell. First came tanning, makeup and getting her competition look right. Valja took foundation, powder, blush, mascara and a bold lip color out of her large makeup bag. Her explanation was simple and practical: colors always look less intense in photos.
Next came a quick application of competition tan from a spray bottle. This was not about vanity, but about making muscle definition more visible in photos and onstage. Bodyfitness is about more than the gym. It is also about the complete stage presentation.
She also had firm views on clothing. She said brunettes should avoid purple or reddish-brown shades, as these do not work well with dark hair when viewed from the audience. For blondes, she recommended shades of pink and black, which creates a strong contrast with light hair. Pale lip colors are best avoided, as they are barely visible from the audience.
One small but important tip: avoid body creams for about 4 days before a competition. This also applies to men who use tanning beds and moisturize their skin before competing. The reason is simple: competition tan needs to adhere properly. It is also best not to wash your hair on competition day, as your hairstyle will hold better.
What does Valentina Zabiyaka’s back workout involve?
As soon as she arrived at the gym, Valja said it was back day. There might be some shoulder work and posing afterward for the photos, but the main focus was her back. Before the first exercise, she did some gentle stretches to warm up.
For her, stretching was a very important part of bodyfitness training. At competitions, she had seen girls with strong, thick back muscles whose back width did not show in their front poses. What is actually happening here? If a muscle is too tight, the line of the physique is lost onstage. That is why Valja emphasized stretching the muscle being worked at the end of every repetition.
The way she performed her sets also differed from a typical bodybuilding workout. She did not take a set to failure, but completed exactly the planned number of repetitions. The weights were on the lighter side. Valja usually performed 10 repetitions per set, or 12 at most.
Back workout
- Seated lat pulldowns to the chest 4 x 10.
- Bent-over dumbbell rows to the abdomen 4 x 10.
- Standing single-arm high cable rows to the abdomen 2 x 15-20.
- Standing single-arm low cable rows to the abdomen 2 x 15-20. These can also be performed with both arms.
For the second exercise, Valja emphasized a full range of motion. This was not a short pumping movement “like the men do,” as she put it. Your arm should travel as far back and up as possible, then as far forward as possible into a stretch. That long range of motion keeps the work focused on the back.
The first two exercises were for building strength and muscle mass. The last two focused more on getting a pump. The weights were even lighter, and the rep count ranged from 15-20. Each was performed for 2 sets.
After the back workout came another thorough stretch. Then the photo shoot began. Valja disappeared into the changing room for about ten minutes and returned with a new hairstyle and top.
Shoulder training and posing after the back workout
For the photos, she added some shoulder work. The exercises were straightforward and made sense for building a stage-ready physique: standing upright rows with 2 dumbbells, seated dumbbell presses, standing barbell presses + standing presses with 2 dumbbells, and cable upright rows.
Frankly, this is a useful reminder if you want to better understand the bodyfitness physique. Your back, shoulders and posing all work together. If your back is strong but your shoulders do not complement its lines, the overall look is incomplete. If your posing is poor, the work you have put in will not come across onstage.
Valentina Zabiyaka’s pre-contest training cycle
Valja’s pre-contest training program was packed. She ran several times a week, with strength training split by muscle group. The photo series was available in the gallery, and the video on Fitness Tv.

Practical takeaways from bodyfitness training
The simple truth is that bodyfitness training involves more than lifting weights. Muscle shape, range of motion, posing, recovery and stage appearance all matter. In Valja’s workout, you could see how every detail ultimately served the same goal.
If you want to apply something from this to your own training, start with three things. Use a greater range of motion in rowing exercises, avoid making every set an all-out effort, and make sure you leave time for stretching at the end of your workout. These are not fancy tricks, but they work.
